I've been planning out a new photo series, and just shot the first set yesterday afternoon and wanted to share. A bit removed from my normal style, but that seems to happen when I get bored at home!

Very nice, I tried some smoke shots once on a whim and let me see if I can dig one or two up.  They are not near as nice as yours though.

I had a LOT of unsable ones/poorly lit ones, took a bit of playing around to get the light right and then to figure out how to move the smoke enough to get the patterns i wanted without blowing it away.

I found the most "uncirculated?" room in my house without windows and tried to shoot there.  I found it impossible to keep the smoke from blowing one way or another which didn't allow me to play with it at all.  Any ideas?

Yep thats what i used. I set everything up on a coffee table and sat on the floor next to it so the smoke was at head level/higher. this helped to keep me from disturbing it.

I held a small bulb blower right under the stick and gently blew to move it around

Yeah, I might give that a shot.  I read on how to capture lightning as well, and MAYBE give that a shot.

Is the colors done by lighting or in post?

The colors are in post. Depending on the light used you will normally get a light blue or brown
