No this is not about how every commercial costume available for women is severely slutty.

While running with my weight vest today, I had that image again of getting shot by a neighbor who thought I was a suicide bomber. I mean, they MUST use these things, they are perfect.

So, is there any way to make a suicide bomber halloween costume that wouldn't end up being totally racist? How about just plain offensive?

Heck, we dress up our kids as pirates, and really, that's a glorified thief/murderer/rapist when you think about it.

I doubt I'd try to actually put it together, as I have no occasion to wear a costume that wouldn't involve my kids, and I have the privileged position of deciding that they're too young to know about that yet.

I don't know about it being edgy or not. Insensitive? quite likely.

I guess you could debate the "racist" part, though I'd personally see it as such. But no way to get around the offensive part, at least for most people. I guess it depends on your audience. There were plenty of girls who dressed up as Kaylee Anthony (the dead 4-year old) last year.

You can dress up with a vest full of red bull and Jager to be a Jager bomb.

MAYBE, just MAYBE, if you put on a pizza delivery uniform including hat, you could be Jessie Eisenberge in 30 minutes or less.

If it was me, I would come up with a different idea.

Why would it be racist, as long as you went as your race?

Personally, I think it's a little too "touchy" of a subject and would consider skipping that idea.

If you decide to go to any public event/party - I would make sure it looks pretty fake.  I would be uneasy trying to get through security at a Vegas club at Halloween wearing a bomb that looks pretty authentic.

Honestly, since there has been zero POSITIVE feedback on this thread, it may be an idication of the general attitude people might have if you actually do it.  Seems to me that if MOST people would not think it's funny, maybe it's not the best idea.

A costume is edgy if some people might find it a bit offensive but the majority see the satire. ( #bookofmormomplay ).  But if everyone thinks it's offensive?

I think that's a pretty solid formula. What interests me is getting at the root of what makes that difference. For example, there's a pro poker player whose nickname was the Unabomber because of his hoodie and shades. There are a couple ways a person could dress that would be obvious "Ted Kaczynski." I think that would likely pass this definition of edgy: some offense, but most would see the satire.

I keep coming back to pirates. Disney took all the reality out of what pirates were. (Not just Disney, but they perfected it.

When does something that was once serious and intense and truly scary, become an icon so recognizable and therefore innocuous that we'll dress our children in it?

Really, I have no plans to use it in this way. It just occured to me while out running with it. Which is probably more evidence that the other thread is dead on: that in itself, was a bad idea.

After that sketch came out, there were two unibombers at every party and I don't remember anybody getting upset over it.

I don't know where the line is, though. A suicide bomber just feels different somehow.

That's it.  and to digress a bit.  So many internet arguements people want "reasons".  Some set line in the sand.  But SO MUCH of it is what someone personally believes is acceptable or not.  Also what a society thinks is acceptable or not.

But someone will always ask "why".  Which is a good question if it get's people to think.  But TO ME, the question "why" can be easily answered "just because".

Some say spanking your kid is ok.  Other say no and ask what the difference between a spaking or a punch in the nose.  It's all violence.  Where's the line?  Well, the line is different for everyone.  But a swat on the bottom doens't FEEL the same as a baseball bat to the face.

So I agree the suicide bomber, in the current enviroment, doesn't "feel" like a good idea and maybe there is no pefect explanation why.

Edgy's cool, but some things can cross the line...AIDS victim, cancer patient, rapist, being the twin towers with an airplane half sticking in ya, etc.  (I'm not equating any of those things with each other, just sayin' they all cross the line.  Since suicide bombers are still goin' at it today, I'd really avoid that one Claaaw.  Good luck.

Ah yeah, good point. Yeah, and I am not a big fan of that guy. (As an even further aside, he was scheduled to appear at the Bloomsburg Fair, the biggest fair in PA, a couple years ago, and it rained out. Then last year he was to come back, and we had a major devastating flood right there. He's back, tonight. I'm an hour away, but I still may build an ark.)

Truth is, I'm not the guy who pushes the envelope in a public setting, but I often wonder about finding the line of what it is anyway. Like Kido says, that's usually a fruitless endeavor, hard to quantify. But I had to laugh at the idea that a baseball bat FEELS different than a spanking. Well yeah, on sooooo many levels.

I wonder if you were seen by the 1% that they would point out that your shoes did not cost thousands of dollars...

Who knows, maybe they do, but I can't tell the difference.
