RIP indeed.

The first to actually teach jazz as a musical style and teach it as a formalized, regimented style of music. The likes of Bob James, Vince Guaraldi (Peanuts Christmas song), George Winston and Pat Metheney all were disciples of his. Even Steely Dan's Donald Fagen learned from him.

His contrbutions to jazz are immeasurable.

Couldn't agree more.  Legend, Pioneer, Transformer, whatever term you want to use, they all fail to truly capture his importance to the musical world.
