Subject: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED

I can start immediately.

Name: kaburns1214 (Kelly)

Story: In December of 2010 I started a mentor group and ended up with a fantastic (and very active) group of triathletes of all abilities.  Over the last two years we've had a lot of interesting discussions on everything from heart rate to dealing with time management to weather to nutrition to dieting to supplements to race scheduling to injuries to recovery and PT.  The group members are training for sprints to marathons to IMs and everything in between.  You can check out our 2011 mentor group thread here and out 2012 mentor group here.  Our core group of about 10 members will be continuing and we're looking for more people who want to join in.  We welcome all abilities / goals / ages / shapes / sizes / locations.

Personally over the two years of having a mentor group I've had a wide range of experiences in both life and triathlon.  2011 was a bit of a break through year for me ending with an 11:26 at Ironman Florida.  2012 was a lot more difficult.  My husband dealt with some pretty significant depression related issues, which took their toll on me and I had a bike crash in July of 2012 that resulted in a dislocated shoulder and a partially torn IT band.  It was generally a rough year and I'm looking forward to a better year in 2013.

Family Status: I am married with a dog and three cats.

Current Training: I have been working with the same coach for the last 2 or so years.  Prior to this I was self coached.  At the moment my training is focused on building aerobic base -- lots of consitent, fairly easy running and biking.  My "A" races for the year are Eagelman and Ironman Florida.  Over the next few months I'll be entering my build and peak phases in preparation for Eagelman.

2012 Races: Poconos 70.3, Ironman Florida.

Planned 2013 Races:  Galveston 70.3, Eagelman 70.3, Ironman Mont Tremblant, Ironman Florida

Weightloss: Body composition is a limiter for me and I continually struggle with getting to a good racing weight.

What Will Make Me a Good Mentor: I love training for and racing triathlons; its a huge part of my life.  Over the last seven years, I picked up a lot of personal experience and have been a big dork and probably read every training book, article, website in existence.  I USAT Level 1 coach and am wokring on my USAC (cycling) Level 2 certification and USMS (masters swimming) Levels 1 and 2 certification.  I have a lot of knowledge to share and love researching new information to share when my group gets onto a topic.  Hopefully, as a group, we will help others get as excited about triathlon as I am.

STORY:
I have been a lurker to BT off and on for years.  Why am I here?  I have committed to a Ironman Muncie 70.3 in 2013.  Since meeting my now husband in 2006, I have dreamed of doing an Ironman, always fear committing to it.  The swim is my greatest obstacle.  My husband is my hero.  He completed Ironman FL in November 2005 at the age of 42. In July 2008 he had Quintuple Bypass Surgery at the age of 44. In November 2011 he completed Ironman FL at the age of 48.  His fitness is the reason he is still alive today. He did NOT have a heart attack.  He listened to his body when he wasn't feeling 'right' when working out.  Two weeks prior to surgery he and I did a 65 mile ride in a hilly-no-cell-zone-county.  He registered for IM FL 2013 and after we confirmed his registration he looks at me and says, your turn.  Laughing  I'm joining this group to help get me thru and keep me accountable and committed to my goal/dream.

FAMILY STATUS: Married my Ironman in 2008.   I have two daughters (both married) and two step-sons.  One grandchild and two more on the wayIn between the birth of these two grandchildren I will be completing my first half.

JOB: I am a Business Assistant for an independent pharmacy chain.

CURRENT TRAINING:
Currently teaching spin classes at the local YMCA through the winter months.  Swimming one night a week with a group.  Ready to ramp up the training commitment in January.  Haven't run for a few weeks now.  I blame it on the short days, but that's not really true.  Just need to adjust my priorities and stay off the computer to get my training in.

LAST YEAR'S RACES: 2012 RACES:  None...unexpected business trip derailed me from my planned race in June.

WEIGHTLOSS:  My weight has been pretty constant.  Since January 2012 I have been 90-95% Paleo.  This is a girl who every single weekend would put away a one pound bag of Peanut M & M's (in one sitting).  I haven't had any candy, cakes, ice cream or cookies for 356 days.  This hasn't been easy for me as I have had issues with food since I was a freshman in high school.  Come January I was to clean my food up a bit more.

Story: Awesome first year of being a triathlete. I learned a lot about what it is being a triathlete and found out a lot about myself. I have a very supportive family and they are as enthusiastic as I am. I have plans to do my first HIM in 2013 and very excited for what this year may bring. 2012 was a great start and looking forward to building from it.

Family Status: I am married with 3 children and two dogs.

Current Training: I was self trained with a little help from BT of course last year. Now I am being coached by an amazing coach and working on building to the HIM level mainly focusing on improving my bike and run. My 'A' races are August 70.3 and looking for an International race early in the season.

2012 Races: Richmond Sprint, Jefferson Sprint, Culpepper International

Planned 2013 Races:  Culpeper International, August 70.3 and a couple more that I haven't quite locked down yet

Weightloss: I hope to be better about watching my weight and the nutrition I take in. I fluctuate between 185-190 but would like to settle in the 180 range hopefully.

I'm in.

Chris

Story: I began playing lacrosse in the 3rd grade, played in college, club after, picked up the Irish sport of hurling a couple of years ago, but after 2 ACL reconstructions, broken ribs, etc., I think I have put my body through enough. I also have a partner who has done a couple of Tri for the Cure sprints, which peaked my interest. I signed up for a couple of sprints last year but tore my hamstring and could not participate. I have done some road races and signed up for a 1/2 marathon in January and have been training consistently for it and have been taking swim lessons since September. After having signed up for a number of sprints and a half in 2013, I am fully on board.

Family Status: I have been with my partner for 4 years, I have a daughter aged 10 and she has two daughters ages 9 and 5. We also have chickens, a dog, 2 cats, and a gecko.

Training: My current training has been in preparation for a 1/2 marathon in January, running 5-6 days a week. I also take swim lessons once a week and swim approximately three times a week. I have been laying off the bike until my 1/2 marathon is over. I have an indoor trainer, so I plan to hit that hard in the new year.

2012 Races: No tris in 2012 but I did the Beach 2 Beacon 10k and Disney 1/2 marathon.

2013 Races: I have signed up for the Polarbear Sprint, Pirate Tri, and Pumpkinman 1/2. I plan to sign up for the Olympic Rev in July when it opens for registration.

Weight/Body: I am 5'9" and about 160, so I don't really need to lose weight.

Looking forward to this. Thanks

Chris

I would like to continue again, this is a great group!

Name: Karen

Story: I'm not sure how many years of triathlons this will be for me. I started sometime around 2004/2005 I think, when a friend talked me into doing a sprint with a pool swim (the thought of racing in open water terrified me). I had been running marathons, was constantly injured, and had a trainer tell me I needed to cross train and do other things besides just run. I've been doing tris ever since.

Family Status: Married to a fabulous man, who follows me all over the country to watch me race, and puts up with my crazy training and sometimes cranky attitude. We have a 22 year old son, who is on "break" from college, living at home and working, he's a good kid man. We also have 3 dogs that I adore.

Current Training: Just finished my first 50k (last weekend) so I'm taking a break, which is killing me!

2012 Races: West Point Oly, Chattanooga Oly, Half Steelman (half iron distance), Vineman full

Planned 2013 Races:  A couple trail runs, Georgia Half Marathon, IM Tahoe, and probably an oly and a half iron leading up to Tahoe.

Weightloss:  An area I always struggle with. It used to be easy to drop 5 - 10 pounds, but not anymore. I really want to focus on this for 2013, and get down to a good racing weight.

Beverly - I'm very interested in your 357 days of paleo. I've tried to go paleo several times, and have not been successful. I'd love to hear how you started and kept it going. Also, do you feel like it has hurt your training at all energy level wise?

Good question! I figure when my tri top fits without spillage I'm good to go. Ha! But really how do you know? I was happy with weight at Wisconsin, so I'm aiming for that weight less 5 pounds for a buffer.

Name:  jarvy01/Jen

Story:  After having baby #4, I suffered from depression.  Part of the depression came from not having any clear personal goals for myself outside of parenting.  I think this is a common problem for mothers, and I am determined to nurture a personal life for myself.  I had gotten so wrapped up in the lives of my children that I lost myself.  I also felt the desire to become strong and fit again.  I picked a race that looked fun and signed up (Chicago oly 2011).  I found this site and started reading.  I am a structured, organized creature of habit, and this sport fits me well.  I still struggle to maintain balance in my life, mostly with time management, but I can say that I am a much, much better mother now that I have found this sport.  I am a much happier person, too.

Family Status:  I've been married for almost 9 years, and we have 4 beautiful children - Conrad (7), Madge (6), Gordon (4), and Frederick (2)

Current Training:  I am building a base for IMMT, my first Ironman and A race of the season.  I struggle with running, so I am always trying to better myself there.  With the help of Kelly, I have stayed injury free for some time.  My biggest obstacle is recovery (both rest and nutrition).

2012 Races:  Grand Rapids olympic, Miltonman olympic, Cleveland olympic, and Half Rev Cedar Point.

2013 Races:  IMMT.  Others TBD.

kidtri33 - 2012-12-22 10:57 AM Speaking of racing weight...How do you determine a good racing weight?

Racing weight is the body weight in which you can race your fastest.  Weigh too much and it slows you down, cut too much muscle and you can loose power.  Its not so much weight as it is body fat percentage (lean body mass should also be looked at but most people  --especially age groupers-- have body fat to cut before even considering cutting lean mass).

The ideal body fat % is different for males and females (females need a little more body fat to ensure proper hormone function) and is different for different sports (swimmers generally have a higher BF % than runners).  General ideal BF % for a female triathlete is 10-15% and males is 5 - 10%.  The best way to determine BF% is with a submersion test (getting dunked in water).

So there is no definite weight.  Two women who are both 5' 8" can have different ideal race weights.  In my case, I have about 20lbs to loose and then I'll have my BF% tested to figure out how much additional weight I should try to loose.

One other point is that most age groupers can be leaner.  But like all things there's a balance.  Are the sacrifices related to getting slightly leaner worth it / do they fit into the bigger life picture.

Scott--

After a really solid 2012 -- what are your performance goals for 2013?

My realistic goal or my pipe dream goal?

I think I can get to under 5:10. My best time was 5:42 last year so that probably sounds aggressive and it is. The pipe dream is under 5.

2013 Races: I have signed up for the Polarbear Sprint, Pirate Tri, and Pumpkinman 1/2. I plan to sign up for the Olympic Rev in July when it opens for registration.

Pumpkinman is a great race (Scott did it in 2012).

What half are prepping for in January?

It's a great race and the turkey dinner after rules. No killer hills on either the bike or the run but there are some longer hills on both that go on for quite a distance that you just need to monitor your heart rate. The swim is a two lap triangle which is interesting because you end up passing both groups that went in front and behind you. The lake is isolated by trees and was a sheet of glass the day of the event. Even the night before when it was really windy at the top of the hill where transition is the lake was calm. There is the 400 yard hike from the water up to transition. It's a bit steep and I chose to walk it which I do not regret.

Name:  trilooney (Erica)

Story: I am hoping to join the group this time around.  I was a part of the group when it first started, and while I "dropped out", I have been stalking the group ever since.  While many of you don't know me, I feel like I know you.  Kelly is a great friend and has mentored me in triathlons, and is now helping me train for a  half marathon.

I have done two half ironmans, a bunch of olympic distance and sprint triathlons, two marathons, and tons of halfs, 10Ks, and 5Ks - all before my daughter was born.

In the past three years, I've gotten married, bought a new home in a new town, had a child, and most recently, I started a new job as a professor at a local university.  For someone who doesn't adjust well to change, that's a LOT of change.  I'm trying to sort through some mood issues, and getting back into running has been a huge help.

Family Status:   I am married, and I have a 14 month old daughter.  Two years ago, I was in the best shape of my life.  That was before Laina arrived.  I had a bit of a traumatic pregnancy between bed rest and Laina arriving a month early.  While we had a bit of a rough start, my daughter is doing wonderfully.

2012/2013 races:  This year, I've really only done a few 5Ks, but I am training for a spring half marathon (althought I don't know which one  yet). I don't yet know what my plans are beyond that.

So I'm supposed to be doing "core work" and haven't yet started.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a dvd for core work. I might be more inclined to do the core work with a video to motivate me.

Also, does anyone have any good suggestions for a yoga video for runners?
