You have 5 girls?  Wow, Scott!  I had no idea.  How do you manage to juggle it all????

It's not easy but basically by doing all my training at ungodly hours. I didn't tell the full story of why I train last session but perhaps I will this time around.

So I'm supposed to be doing "core work" and haven't yet started.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a dvd for core work. I might be more inclined to do the core work with a video to motivate me.

Also, does anyone have any good suggestions for a yoga video for runners?

Erica

This site has great core workouts.  I think they'll come up if you search the articles.  Most of them are done on the Fitball.  I've had terrific results doing these!!!!

Name: Jeff (rizer22)

Story: I started with XC mountain bike racing in late 2010. Pretty much chatted with a father at my kids birthday party in June 2010. He raced mountain bikes. Somehow, I was convinced that had to be easy. 2 days later I bought a mountain bike, and entered my first race 3 weeks after that thinking 3 weeks of riding the bike was plenty of training. Needless to say, it was an eye opener and got my a$$ handed to me. But, the natural high of finishing that first race, made me addicted to endurance sports. Bought a road bike in Feb 2011, for the sole purpose of building endurance for mountain bike racing. That led to me loving the road bike, and then seeing an advertisement for a Sprint Tri in my home town. I couldn't turn down a challenge, so started training for that. 2011 was a great year and built a great base. I had plans for Rev 3 Quassy half iron in June 2012. Those plans got sidelined after I was involved in a car accident in Sept 2011. Although i participated in a couple mountain bike races, and a 5k, 2012 was pretty much non existent. Shoulder Surgery and most recent peroneal nerve decompression surgery in the left knee, have all but sidelined me. I am determined to make 2013 my year.

Current Training: I feel as if I'm almost starting fresh. I only had about 2,400 cycling miles in 2012, 25-30% being mountain bike/trails. 4-6 more weeks for the nerve to heal in my knee, then am clear to get back on track. I am cleared to get back in the pool next week. So mid to late January, I start an Olympic Plan on BT, followed by HIM plan on BT as well2012 Races: a few Route 66 XC MTB races, 5k, one small, local Sprint Tri.

Planned 2013 Races: Route 66 XC Mountain bike Races (3), Ten Penny Ale Glastonbury Duathlon (May) REV 3 Quassy Olympic Tri (June), Timberman 70.3 in August is the plan for now. Possibly another Olympic and def a Sprint.

Weightloss: I typically don't struggle here too much. I'm 5' 9". Race weight for me, where I felt my best was about 155. Today, I'm at 163. Weight is still fine for that height, but I feel like sh*t. I can't wait to get back in the best shape of my life, like 2011.

This is technically my third round here with Kelly. Although not too involved in 2012 because of injuries, I still stuck around. Kelly is very committed to all of us. Cheers to another great year for this group. I'm pumped to be back (hopefully) and very excited for all of us in 2013. There are some big commitments and goals for most of us.

I'm back to give a bio....

Name: Deb / Cheeky Monkey

Story:  I moved from the UK to the US in 2005, and gained 38lbs in about 14 months. I ended up back on antidepressants and in dire need of 'something' to kick start me. I actually was inspired to try a triathlon by watching the contestants on The Biggest Loser - I figured it looked like fun.

I finished my first race about 5 years ago and it was a complete disaster, so that was the end of tri for me. Then, I moved to a new town, met some training buddies at the new gym, and gave it another shot. It went SO much better and I gained confidence. I have been doing something tri related ever since. To date, I have completed 1 marathon, 1 HIM, 1 Aquabike Half, 3 HM's, and too many sprints to count.

Around the same time I finished my second tri, I went to Lake Placid to watch the Ironman. I came away completely and utterly horrified: I was totally convinced they were all absolutely certifiable. The following year we went up again, and I was captivated. I still thought them all a bit mad, but I was intrigued and the seed was planted. I kept thinking about it during the year, but mentioned it to only one friend. The following year I went knowing I wanted to do it. This year I was a finish line catcher and one of the first few in line for sign ups.

My time management skills will be put to the test this year, as I am also in school p/t.

Family Status: Married with 2 kids (18 & 19)Hubby is awesome and frequently drives all over the place to come to races with me, drives courses of races I 'might' want to do, shleps my stuff, and puts up with me waking him up at stupid hours in the mornings as I scrape around for my gear.

The kids just think 'Mum's gone a bit bonkers'.

Current Training: I start my official LP plan in 9 days! I have been running 3x's week, cycling 2x's but that wet thing? haven't done that since Pumpkinman.

2012 Races: Lake Placid Marathon, Lake George Half Marathon, Whaling city Tri, Pumpkinman AB.

Planned 2013 Races:

Hampton Half marathon - Feb

Ironman Lake Placid - July

+ a HIM. I am undecided on which one yet, but at the moment REV3 Quassy is looking likely, though I'm a little scared of it lol

+ a few other sprints if my body and my budget can handle it.

Weightloss:Thisis one of my biggest issues.  When I moved to the Us I was 150 ish, soon after I was 188. After some crazy dieting (1000 cal per day) I finally got my weight back to 156. Then I started training for a HM & straight after that, a HIM. I went back up to 177 ish. I switched to a plant based diet this fall and am now hovering in the low 160's, but I would love to keep trying to get down to 146 ish. I struggle with this no end. I am SO sick of people telling me "calories in Vs. Calories out" it just doesn't seem to work for me. I can run deficits and still gain weight.  I am SO, so frustrated by this.

I'm excited to be part of this group, I can't wait to learn, grow and train with all of you.

I will start logging my workouts on here again: I stopped a while ago when I switched to TP.

I had a solid 45 minute zone one ride on the trainer yesterday followed by a 7 mile run as 2 warm up, 4 temp at 8/mi pace and 1 cool down. Followed that up this morning with 45 minutes on the trainer at recovery pace. Legs felt pretty good this morning but I stuck with the recovery pace. I have tendency after big workouts to think well I feel good so I'll go with it and then the third day totally crash.

I have a question regarding training plans.

My first sprint tri is in about 19 weeks.

My "A" race is a HIM in Sept (about 36 weeks).

Should I chose a training plan for the sprint and then begin a training plan for the 1/2 after? In looking over the training plans in BT, I see that there is a beginner 1/2 for 20 weeks but that would not be enough "time" with how many weeks I would have left until my 1/2 (17 weeks).

So I am not sure how to chose an appropriate training plan for the races I will do this year.

Thanks.

Chris

Name: Scott

Story: Formerly into power lifting.  At some point I considered taking steroids but decided to do a sprint tri on a dare.  A couple years later and I'm a triathlon junkie.

Family Status: Married with 2.75 daughters. LOL

Current Training: Base training phase for IMTX.

2012 Races: Sprints, Olys, OilMan HIM

Planned 2013 Races:  Texas 70.3, IMTX, various other races

Scott--

I'd love is you share how training for your first IM is going with 2.75 daughter and 1.25 wives (is that correct :-)

Ha!  There are far too many overly opinionated women in my life.  Training is going well.  Pretty much working on fixing my aerobic base.  So many years of power lifting has left me with a huge anaerobic capacity but not so much on the aerobic front.  Slow and arduous, but it will all pay off in May.

Good to see so many new faces in here.

Thanks.

Chris

You have a pretty solid running base (especially with your HM training).  What I would do is take a week off after Disney (I'm a big advocate of taking some complete and total down time after A races to let you body recovery) and then I would format a longer plan focused on the HIM.

A HIM is going to require a decent amount of endurance (and especially bike endurance  -- you can never spend too much time in the saddle prepping for a HIM).  I would focus for 8 - 12 weeks on building base and just getting your volume up at an aerobic intensity on both the bike and the run and getting comfortable swimming longer distances.  Then spend 4 -8 weeks working on adding strength endurance and speed in preparation for the sprint.  Race the sprint (I wouldn't do a full taper for the sprint.  I would place it at the end of a rest week and then take a few easier days after the sprint) and then pick back up in base for 4-8 weeks and then add intensity in preparation for the HIM.

The problem with doing a sprint plan and then going into a HIM plan is that the sprint plan (especially on the BT site) is really low volume and if you don't start prepping for the HIM volume wise sooner, its going to be a tough jump.  If you are looking at set plans, I would look at a longer HIM plan and fit your sprint race into that plan.

karen26.2 - 2012-12-22 8:40 AM Beverly - I'm very interested in your 357 days of paleo. I've tried to go paleo several times, and have not been successful. I'd love to hear how you started and kept it going. Also, do you feel like it has hurt your training at all energy level wise?

Karen, I started 2012 Paleo because I wanted/needed to clear the sugar from my body.  I am a sugar addict.  The sweets werre my main goal to get rid of.  I've never been a 'bread' person.  It started with a 30 day goal and after 30 days when I could say "I haven't had sugar, grains, or dairy for 30" I kept at it more because I could say I did.  But I am truly amazed at my mood.  There's something about not eating crap and knowing you're not eating crap.  Just taking it one day at a time.  I must admit I eat the fire out of mixed nuts.   Possibly my new M&Ms.

As far as training?  I actually have been feeling stronger.  Not sure if it's the extra protein or just the clean eating, but it worth hanging in there.  I'm not strict Paleo, I'd say I'm Paleo with a curve.  I will eat breaded chicken on occasion and a few things like that when visiting friends or eating out, but I try to keep it clean.

I'm going to play around with my nutrition while training for my 70.3.  I will probably allow myself powergels and that's ok.

Karen, give it another shot.  I get lots of my recipes from www.paleomg.com

I'm also doing the Atlanta half in March.

Have you done Chattanooga Olympic? That is hands down the best olympic race around here IMO. Not a horrible drive the morning of either if you don't want to stay the night before.

There are actually a few good olympics in the Atlanta area. I just love Chattanooga, it was my first olympic, I was terrified, but ended up having a great time and it's where I decided I was going to really get into tris.

Thanks for sharing your story. I do want to give it another shot.

I have cut down considerably on breads/starches the past several months, but sugar is my big weakness. I really need to just cut it out because it's a viscous cycle with me. (Peanut M&M's are one of my favorites, so I can relate!) Oh, and beer is another weakness. My husband brews beer, really good beer (today he's brewing a porter Yell) so it's always readily available in the house.

The first couple of times I tried eating paleo I felt like crap exercising. No energy at all, I would finish my workouts (never quit) but felt horrible. So I gave up because it was just not worth it to me, especially training for long course.

However, I will say the last time I started I ate a lot more veggies, some fruit, did have gels during long training days, and felt pretty darn good. I need to find that balance. Give up the sugar (candy & ice cream) and of course the beer. I do love breads and pasta, but I can easily say no to that.

I guess I also feel like I need to be 100% paleo, so if I slip up, I completely give up and go back to my bad habits. It's always black and white with me, but I like your curve approach.
