This doesn't exactly answer your question, but according to this source, in 2009, of 15,000 total homicides over 9,000 (about 60%) were committed with a gun. Actually, looking at the data again, the answer to the question you ask does seem to be there - it generally seems to hover around about 3 people per 100,000.... And according to Huffpo there have been over 100 shooting deaths in the US since Sandy Hook.... |

How many more thousands will need to die before we as a country start taking firearms as seriously as other first-world countries? For many, it doesn't seem to matter. They will never, ever admit that guns might be part of the problem. People who want to kill will always find a way, they say. Never mind that guns make it obscenely easier to kill, and from a distance, than any other instrument. Nope, all gun owners are so level headed and responsible that they would never resort to using their guns during a fit of rage, but only in self defense and as a very last resort. |

Guesstimates of roughly 90 million gun owners in this country.... 10,000 gun homicides a year.... 90,000,000.... 10,000.... one death... per 9000 owners... but ya, the obvious answer is to punish and blame the 9000. There were 4000 homicides without guns... not sure what we will ban for those. |

Based upon the stats in the post above yours, "569 sexual assault", and seeing as rape is said to be a crime of anger, it seems that mental health would be a bigger problem and bigger part of the solution than gun control. Maybe we should focus our money where we can make the biggest impact? Or of course we can just jump in and point fingers at guns and implement laws that will do nothing to slow violence. |

Is that 3 Ten Thousandths of 1% of the population? @ Tony as to why do I care, while it appears that some in our nation and in this forum come across as being pleased that these tragedies occur so they can attempt to advance their political agenda, I think it's important to keep in perspective how infrequently these things occur statistically. This sick POS who did this was a convinced felon who had no legal right to own or possess a firearm and again when confronted with a good guy with a gun, took his own life. These things are sad, despicable and tragic and it would be nice if those with such an agenda would take a break at least on the day before Christmas, but I know that is asking to much from those who are willing to exploit the tragedies of others. @ Tripolar, yes guns can kill from a distance, they can also in the right hands, keep a woman from being raped by someone much bigger and stronger.

The murder rate there is also around 0.3 per 100,000, rather than 3 per 100,000. They seem to do just fine without guns. And it would be great if we lived in a cut and paste world, but we don't. Also in Japan, when the country is decimated by a Tsunami... they all satnd in line waiting for stuff quietly, and help each other get what they need instead of getting on CNN screaming at Washington Politicians why they can't watch TV the next day after the entire Eastern Sea Board has been destroyed by a hurricane. I don't seem to remember any rioting in Japan after the tsunami as there was after Katrina either. Two entirely different cultures. Oh ya, and the fact that the RTBA is not Constitutionaly protected in Japan... I mean there is that too. |
