I'm sure there is a some good reason that everyone seems to use Macs, but I'd rather avoid making that investment (and learning curve) at the moment...

I've used PowerDirector for a few years now and it is a pretty good setup. I've got the Ultimate version and it does basically all I've needed to do. It's also around $100 and not a thousand or so

Premiere elements is under 100 and pretty good. I use it instead of a "found" full version just because it's simpler and quicker for 99% of the basic stuff. Premiere/Photoshop elements combo packs sometimes under 125 - again, if you want full legal versions. 

Heard good things about Vegas pro but haven't used it.
