jmkizer - 2013-01-31 8:58 AM JJ- - 2013-01-30 6:08 PM IT BAND INJURY Aaagggghhhhhh........ So frustrated as I type this. Last week I ran on some pretty sore legs. At the end of the run my right knee began to hurt so much that I had to stop running and walk home. I saw my Chiro/Sports Med Doctor. He said it was my IT band and he stemmed, massaged, stretched me. Told me to take it easy this weekend which I kinda did (didn't do my long run Sunday). Anyways went for my run this morning and 20 minutes in my IT band began to tighten up and 30 minutes in I was in pain. Still hurt even when walking. Went back to my Doc and he said it was much worse. He repeated the above therapy and said I need to stay off my legs for 7 days. No running, no cycling, no walking, no lower body strength exercises. Just ice and stretch and foam roller. He did say that I can swim since it isn't load bearing. Well I am clearly frustrated because I am 2 months away from my first half ironman and I was really doing a great job building my fitness for it. I don't feel like I can take 7 days off even though I know it probably will do me good anyway. I'm sure someone in here has experienced this so advice, thoughts, comments? I know rest is best thing but it's the hardest thing to do I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this injury and I totally understand your frustration. I'm glad that you are seeing a sports med guy. I'm confident that he will get you all fixed up soon. You've already built to a long run of 10 miles and honestly, that is pretty darn good. I'm not sure that did a long run much more than that before my first HIM. This is only a minor set back. Try not to let it get you down. Things to think about:

It sounds like you are on track. One other comment -- arnica cream or gel (it's even available at wal-mart!). Please let us know what your coach says. |

I'm curious as to what the cons of soaking in Epsom salts / baking soda would be. As far as I know the worst that happens is you get clean. As Janyne stated, though, definitely not hot or even warm. Lukewarm. I should go take a look at your logs (if that info is there) but I'm also curious what "really ramped up" means for you in terms of numbers as well as running training structure and intensity. Did you occasionally (common patterns are 2-3 weeks on, 1 week slightly less or at least not increasing load in any way) take a pull-back period? Stretching for PT, that is, in order to address a problem (and perhaps later to maintain solution) is different than stretching as part of training, and it (actually either kind) doesn't necessarily take place after you work out (and is sometimes outright contraindicated before, depending). My guess is if your IT band(s) are that inflamed, aquajogging is out of the question too, although it's certainly not load-bearing. 7 days at this point off your legs is unlikely to affect your training as a whole, especially since as you said you ramped up a lot and have already put in a lot of base for running. And it's not optional anyway, so I wouldn't worry. |

Well I did about an hour twenty on the drainer this morning to get my bike time to at least where it was for December (missed it by like 20 seconds I am definitely feeling yesterday's swim. Interestingly my right bicep is sore, my left bicep is slightly less sore but my left lat is sore I'm about 3 months in to HIM training, with 8 weeks to go. I am noticing some muscle definition that I've not had before. Also all my clothes, even my skinny clothes, are loose. I hope my suits fit me for trial in a couple weeks Someone, I think ChrisM, posted the following elevation graph of the Oceanside bike course and I'm including my elevation graph, again, from my ride a couple weeks ago. I'm a bit nervous about the Oceanside hills but know that being at sea level will work in my favor (that's favour for those of you across the pond) too to some extent as well. Thoughts? Yanti, I don't think there are any cons to epsom salts. If they are going to help, they will. Some people don't think they are helpful. I personally love them. I'm also coming around to arnica. I have some peppermint foot lotion with arnica. I love using it on my feet and legs after I run. |

![]() | ![]() I posted this in the other thread but oh my gosh! I am exhausted (additional information in blog!) Just wrapping up a big running month. I went snowboarding all day yesterday and then went to track practice. Our workout was 5 x 1200 @ 4:48 (that's 6:26 per mile pace.) Our splits were: 4:47 We sped up and dropped 8 seconds off of that last rep. I was thinking that I was only going to do 3 or 4 reps since I was so tired from snowboarding but then they asked me to lead the 4th rep and by the time I finished that I figured I may as well finish out the workout. Little did I know they were going plaid on that last rep. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, wanted to share some DS1 news with all y'all. So since we joined the gym DS1 has been going most every evening. Sometimes he hits the dreadmill, sometimes strength training and sometimes he swims. So the other night I casually gave him some basic information about swimming downhill, looking down, high elbows small kick etc. So this morning he told me he'd used my suggestions during his swim last night and he was amazed at the improvement in the effectiveness of his swim. He even said that the girl who is ALWAYS in the hot tub while he swims commented on his improved abilities. I'll turn that kid into a triathlete yet... |
