So my gym has a hot tub in the men's locker room.  There's a sign that clearly states shorts are required.  But there have been multiple times when I have got in and there was already a guy in it.  Eventually, the guy already in it stands up to leave and BOOM!  Surprise!  I'm not wearing any shorts.  Get an eye full of that!  C'MON MAN!

I dont sit in the hot tub anymore...

I can't speak for the women's pool, but I can tell you that there were quite a few men in the men's pool who were naked.  My brother and I had endless hours of laughter over it, but there you go....it is what it is.

Used to go hiking around Barton Creek in Austin when I was a kid.  Lots of people would skinny dip and that's where I saw my first pair of real-life boobs.  They were perfect!

This has nothing to do with your story, I just wanted to share.  Carry on...

Over here (UK) people would look at you weird if you had shorts on in a tub that was in the mens locker room.

Other places in Europe it'd be weird in men and womens shared area too.

At our health club the hot tub is inside the men's locker room; there is no such sign/rule, and nudity is the norm. If there is a rule it should be followed, but I'm not sure why what someone else wears or doesn't wear is that big a deal.

Private hot tub, do as you wish.  Public hot tub, follow the rules as posted.  Not too difficult.

There's this old guy at my gym that wears flip flops so he doesn't get a foot fungus, but shaves otherwise bare naked and puts his just all over the counter while he's leaning over it to shave.  Not related...but I'm for respecting posted rules.  My gym's hot tub is coed, so shorts are obvious  Our Sauna is gender-specific and is posted to please wear shorts.

It would be a big deal if someone showed up at my pool, that requires swimsuits, and decided to put in a few laps nude.  Why do you think a hot tub, that requires a swimsuit, is any different?

Interesting edit of The Bear's original post. I think the full quote was:

In other words, if the guy is following the rules, then what the guy isn't wearing shouldn't be a problem.

Personally, if the rule-breaking is a problem and is consistent, I would go to the manager and say `Can you post a sign emphasizing that nudity isn't acceptable.'

A bit OT, but back in the early 60's our small town YMCA in Indiana prohibited grade school age boys from wearing swim suits; something about it being "unsanitary".

We had a Saturday morning gym & swim program and there would be about 30 of us swimming around buck naked for an hour or so. The only exception was for a Mennonite boy who was allowed to swim in a tee shirt and long black pants for religious reasons.  And of course our swim instructor/lifeguard (who I thought to be about 90 years old) wore his suit.

Obviously, their were separate swim sessions for boys and girls (who were allowed to wear suits and were required to wear swim caps - the old style with the chin straps).

And of course we had to wear to suits during family swim sessions.

Different times.  Can't imagine anything like that today.

If it's a hot tub in the locker room I don't have a real problem with it.  C'mon it's the locker room that's what you do is get naked in the locker room.  I don't go commando in the locker room hot tub but that's just me.  I see some of the old dudes rockin' the commando look all the time in the locker room why would the hot tub be any different.

Despite the selective editing that Goggs has already pointed out, I'll go ahead and say, no, it wouldn't be a big deal to me. I certainly wouldn't swear off use of the facility as the OP did. If the hot tub is contained within a single-gender locker room, I really see no reason for the rule.

There was an old timer last night going from row to row, naked, engaging anyone who would talk to him about his recent colonoscopy and the polyps that were removed.  I was broke up laughing.

I have no idea if he made it to the hot tub.

Preachin to the choir -- I personally wouldn't care but if the gym has that rule, then the gym has that rule and people should follow it.

At my gym there was some people getting frisky in the steam room so they had to actually put up a sign making it against the rules to do that. As if it's not common knowledge that you shouldn't be getting frisky in a public steam room? Sometimes the rules are in place for a reason whether we think they're worthy or not.

Other places in Europe it'd be weird in men and womens shared area too.

I want to move there.

How was the editing selective if I captured exactly what you meant?  I agree, it wouldn't be a big deal to me either, but I can understand that to some people, including presumably the OP, that it might be a big deal being faced with some guy's junk when the rule at that hot tub prohibit junk on display.

A little off topic - strange denizens of the gym hot tub.  A friend of mine used to work at a gym.  One time there was a guy pleasuring himself in the hot tub.  He got a police escort out of the gym.

I've been less inclined to get in public hot tubs after hearing that.

Just for the record, I'm not bothered by nudity in a men's locker room.  Rather, it's nudity when you aren't expecting it.  This hot tub can seat about 6 men comfortably... so maybe you can understand my plight when men are already in it and I innocently enter not knowing that some of them are w/o shorts... and in a hot tub that size, when a man stands up to get out, you come face-to-face with his manhood... it's a surprise attack.

Our gym has hot tubs and cold plunges in the locker rooms.  They used to have a sign about bathing suits being required, but it wasn't always followed.  They took the sign down.  Problem fixed.

It does skeeve me out a bit, especially when they get in WITHOUT showering ahead of time, and I'm imagining what's floating on the surface.  Though when you really think about it, what does a layer of spandex/lycra/polyester really do?  Maybe just a "visual" aid.

I still use the tubs, especially the cold plunge.  Seems to really help with recovery.  And I'll wear whatever shorts I was working out in, AFTER rinsing off in the shower.
