Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed GROUP FOCUS: Love of the Sport (Rookies and Veterans Welcome) NAME: UHCoog (Scott) STORY: Hi. I’m Scott a former meathead, lifelong athlete, and triathlon addict. In 2010 I happened to shoot off my mouth about maybe entering a sprint triathlon in front of some friends and had my bluff called. Never one to shy from an athletic challenge away I went. At the time I had never run much more than a mile, didn’t own a bike, and hadn’t swam freestyle since the age of 8. Luckily I found this site to help me navigate through my first sprint. Since then I’ve been a fixture in kaburns1214’s (Kelly’s) mentor group and have progressed from sprint to oly to half iron to my first Ironman coming up on May 18th at IMTX. I participate in triathlon first and foremost for the health benefits. I was at a tipping point in power lifting where I was tempted to try illegal substances and triathlon has been a blessing. I also love triathlon because it is an outlet for an overactive competitive drive. That first triathlon in 2012 I felt a rush I hadn’t felt since the days of high school athletics. Triathlon is a way to test me against me, and me against others. FAMILY STATUS: I am a married father to 3 little girls. Reagan is about to turn 6, Abby is 4, and Quinn is 2 months old. Yes 2 months old and an Ironman coming up. I’m crazy, I know. CURRENT TRAINING: Currently I train by heart rate, and a power meter is in the offing as soon as I can afford that bugger. 3 daughters can sap the old tri budget. I am coached by Kelly Gallagher 2013 RACES: My races for the rest of the year are Sylvan Beach Sprint, Houston Oaks Sprint, Clear Lake Oly, and OilMan (70.3) WEIGHTLOSS: I have/had been overweight for as long as I can remember. I distinctly remember at age 12 stepping on a scale and seeing 200 lbs. I was always the athletically gifted fat kid. I’ve been as big as 250-260. When I entered my first race in 2010 I was 235 lbs. Currently I am 170 lbs, and have a pretty severe body image issue. WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: I have had the privilege of being in a wonderful mentor group the past couple years. The core group there has become like a family to me. I am on BT every day, whether for a few minutes or a few hours, and this group will get my full attention. Triathlon junkie is also a pretty good way to describe me. I am always willing to debate, learn, and research anything multisport related. Recently I have become a USA Cycling certified coach and will be getting my USAT certification in the near future. I am always open to sharing any and all knowledge I have with members in a constructive, if sometimes firm, manner. Really I just want to see people succeed and exceed their goals. Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group Name: kaburns1214 (Kelly) (co-mentoring -- Scott was actually the first person to ever join my mentor group almost 3 years ago) Personally over the two years of having a mentor group I've had a wide range of experiences in both life and triathlon. 2011 was a bit of a break through year for me ending with an 11:26 at Ironman Florida. 2012 was a lot more difficult. My husband dealt with some pretty significant depression related issues, which took their toll on me and I had a bike crash in July of 2012 that resulted in a dislocated shoulder and a partially torn IT band. It was generally a rough year and I'm looking forward to a better year in 2013. Family Status: I am married with a dog and three cats.Current Training: I have been working with the same coach for the last 2 or so years. Prior to this I was self coached. At the moment my training is focused on building aerobic base -- lots of consitent, fairly easy running and biking. My "A" races for the year are Eagelman and Ironman Florida. Over the next few months I'll be entering my build and peak phases in preparation for Eagelman. |

I had always been interested in triathlons when I used to watch the Ironman championship on TV as a kid. I made the jump from running only races to tri's last year and fell into this site to help me get started and then got the best luck of all and fell into kaburns1214(Kelly's) group. This was the best thing for me and has helped my grow in knowledge and ability in this sport. Similar to Scott I particpate first and foremost for my health. My family has a history of Heart disease and I try to do everything possible to make sure I am around for my family. Before I got serious with my training I was as big as 215 and wasn't eating well. I am down to 185 now which seems to be the best weight for me at this point. FAMILY STATUS: I am a married father to 3 beautiful children. Wesley is 13(14 next month), Angie is 12(this weekend), Grayer is 2 and we have one on the way. I know crazy huh?! CURRENT TRAINING: I train by heart rate. I would love to get a power meter but not in the budget anytime soon. I, like Scott am coached by Kelly Gallagher from Sonic Endurance. I am building this year for my first HIM in June at REV3 Williamsburg and then hope to build to full IM after that. THIS YEAR'S RACES: Just ran a couple of run races this year set a new PR for 10 miler (1:17:53); My first Tri is on the 19th.2013 RACES: GroundForce IT Sprint May19th; Jamestown Oly/Int June 8th; REV3 Half Williamsburg June 28; Culpeper Oly/Int August 3rd WEIGHTLOSS: I was pretty skinny for most of my life until I got out of the Navy. I hit over 200 and then got into bodybuilding and got back down to 173 at my performance weight. Then got out of that due to injury and got up to 215. I am down to 185 now which is a good weight even though I think 180 could be my best performance/look. |

Hahaha. About time.
I'd just like to point out to new/potential group members that there are a lot of us that "know" each other here from previous mentor groups. PLEASE don't let this keep you from participating in this group. We love to keep picking up new members. It keeps things interesting and fresh. |

Member 216 Haymarket, VA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group NAME: mleech77 (Matt) LOCATION: Haymarket, VA STORY: This is my first season of triathlon. Last year I got a scare from my doctor, my BP was high enough to have me at stage 2 hypertensive. I refused to be put on medication so the doc gave me 6 months to get it in order or he was telling my wife. 6 months later after a change in my eating habits as well as a semi regular workout routine I had it back under control. Working out for the sake of working out wasn't enough for me so I decided to pick up an activity. I have some friends that race bicycles, some that do marathons/half-marathons, and my wife loves to swim. I figured why not just do all three. Starting in December '12 I joined here and started the couch to sprint program. Did my first sprint distance 4/21 down in Richmond while sick as a dog. I finished last in my age group, but I finished, and that's all that matters to me. FAMILY STATUS: I am married, with two extremely energetic (when they aren't being the laziest dogs in existence) Siberian Huskies. CURRENT TRAINING: My training has been based off of the programs here, with some slight modification. I'm seeing how this season goes, and then I may look into an actual coach to help me train better. I add in some addt'l stuff as weather permits, hiking, mountain biking, canicross, and as my dogs get more comfortable with it bikejoring. Planned 2013 RACES: GroundForce IT Sprint May 19th; Naylor's Beach Sprint June 2nd; Manassas Mini Tri June 9th; The 14.06 July 21; The Tavern Sprint July 28; Summer Super Sprint August 4; Brickman Sprint October 6 WEIGHTLOSS: My weight loss has been a natural occurrence from better eating habits and the workout routine. Since December '12 when I started paying attention to it via MyFitnessPal I've gone from 170 to 147 (as of this morning). PROBLEM AREA: The swim! I never was taught how to swim properly (breathing while doing freestyle swim), so for now I'm relying on a swim snorkel since it's allowed per USAT rules. I'm hoping to find a local place I can take lessons to finally learn proper form, and not be "that guy". |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group Name: jarvy01/Jen Story: After having baby #4, I suffered from depression. Part of the depression came from not having any clear personal goals for myself outside of parenting. I think this is a common problem for mothers, and I am determined to nurture a personal life for myself. I had gotten so wrapped up in the lives of my children that I lost myself. I also felt the desire to become strong and fit again. I picked a race that looked fun and signed up (Chicago oly 2011). I found this site and started reading. I am a structured, organized creature of habit, and this sport fits me well. I still struggle to maintain balance in my life, mostly with time management, but I can say that I am a much, much better mother now that I have found this sport. I am a much happier person, too. Family Status: I've been married for 9 years, and we have 4 beautiful children - Conrad (8), Madge (6), Gordon (4), and Frederick(3) Current Training: I am training for IMMT, my first Ironman and A race of the season. I struggle with running, so I am always trying to better myself there. With the help of Kelly at Sonic Endurance, I have stayed injury free for some time. My biggest obstacle is recovery (both rest and nutrition). 2012 Races: Grand Rapids olympic, Miltonman olympic, Cleveland olympic, and Half Rev Cedar Point. 2013 Races: Deer Creek olympic (Columbus), Huntington Beach sprint (Cleveland), Columbus Multisport Festival olympic, Ironman Mont Tremblant, and Rock and Roll HM Cleveland |
