239![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Newbie with a "newbie question"Hi all. I'm planning on my 1st tri this summer. I'm kinda getting excited and have been obsessing over this for the last few days. I consider myself to be in fairly good shape. I'm 43 and have a "runner's body" (5'9", 153#). I have been a long time on/off distance runner. Luckily, I am a fairly strong swimmer but am sure I have minimal endurance with it. I'm not much of a biker but am looking forward to it. My initial thought was to start with a sprint, but I feel I'm in pretty good shape and am considering an Olympic in late summer/early fall. Here's my 1st question (of what will undoubtedly be many): when the training plans mention base times (40min run, 40min swim, 80min bike), are those times meant individually or back-to-back-to-back in 1 session? Specifically, in my 40-40-80 example, would that be each one on its own (not in 1 session) or all three of them in one session? Again, I'm sure I'll have many questions, but this seemed the most logical place to start. Thanks! Duane Edited by dbrook1 2013-05-17 10:59 PM |

Your background is running so I would anticipate you being able to run the "base fitness" level. Most people new to triathlon come in from one single sport as their strength and want to branch out. If you are looking at sprints you should be fine just training to the base fitness level, there's plenty of time to build distances for this sport. Welcome to BT! |

Regular 194![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Morton IL | Subject: RE: Newbie with a "newbie question"Probable individual. My training plan and instructions from my coach will always call out "brick" or "off bike" if I am to run then bike right after. These are important, it is getting easier for me but still hard to run right off bike.... Still most workouts are not back to back to back. I may swim early before work and go for a ride or run after work. I have had 1-2 brick runs every week for a while now. Hate but they are getting easier for me! Congrats on trying a triathlon! Just did my first sprint and already signed up for a 70.3. Edited by Paulford8 2013-05-18 9:23 AM |

239![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Newbie with a "newbie question"Thanks for the responses. Here is a direct quote from one of the training programs on this site: --"Use this if you have between 4 and 8 hours per week to train and a minimum base of 40min swim, 40min run and 80min bike." This is what I am referencing. I assume it means that before I begin the program I can do each of these separately, not as one continuous workout. |
