BuDu Racing
55F / 13C
Overcast
Total Time = 58m 46s
Overall Rank = 6/82
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/4
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:00, had oatmeal and a banana grabbed my stuff and hit the road. Out the door at 5:30. After a stop at Starbucks for a coffee I was on my way. The drive took about 75 minutes to the race site.
Event warmup:

Got to the race and did a short bike ride and then set up in transition. After that, I did a quick run and got my wetsuit on. Did about 200 yards of swimming and got ready to start.
Swim
  • 08m 31s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a tough swim. I was prepared for the short swim from last year and went out way to hard, died in the middle, and then had to hang on after that. The only good news is I recovered very quickly and actually felt quick good in transition. But I wasn't pleased with my swim.
What would you do differently?:

Start at a most modest effort and pace myself through to the end.
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Good transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 27m 30s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty good about the bike. Pushed pretty hard and passed several people who were out of the water ahead of me while not getting passed at all. The only downside is I did pay for it a little on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Not bad, but a little slower than I would have liked.
What would you do differently?:

Had trouble getting my running shoes on and set. Time to switch to my new shoes.
Run
  • 21m 10s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

I was just gassed from the bike and didn't feel like I could maintain my normal, desired pace. The headwind hurt on the gradual hill that came at about the halfway mark. But I was feeling pretty poor from the start and felt like I was getting close to blowing chunks. Eventually that went away and it was just a sort of "hand on" run.
What would you do differently?:

More interval training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Skill, talent and desire.

Event comments:

It's a decent race for the first of the year. BuDu does a good job and the events are always consistent and steady. I wasn't feeling strong at all to start, but once things got rolling and I got my HR up, I was into the spirit of the race.

Overall: 13/82
Performance: Below average
Suit: zoot fusion
Course: Rectangle course. Mass start for men, followed by the women 3 minutes later. There was a medium wind that put some current on the water. Plus, I'm fairly certain the course was longer than last year. I'm swimming much better this year and I was 2 minutes slower....in fact all the time were considerably slower, so it had to be more than just the wind/chop.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

My first attempt two years ago was not so successful when a deck nail found its way into my foot a week before the race. But I kept plugging away the last couple of years to stay healthy and get back.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
