Overcast
Total Time = 2h 31m 46s
Overall Rank = 47/111
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 7/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4AM, ate 2 pieces of homemade whole wheat bread with pb and Nutella on it, with 2 cups of coffee. Packed everything up and left by 5:10, for the 1:15 drive. Got there in plenty of time to get set up, run a little bit, talk to a few friends. Bathroom twice before race, Froze water bottles almost half way up night before then filled before I left house. 1 water, 1 gatorade mix. Next time only need 1 bottle for bike with water only. I am thinking of getting the aero bottle from Profile designs if It will fit on my bike.
Event warmup:

Ran a little bit, jumped in water without wet suit, decided I wanted wet suit on. Ate a Gel 15-20 mins before swim start, only drank maybe 12-18 oz of water before the race all morning besides coffee but still peed in the wet suit as soon as I got in the water to start the race.
Swim
  • 33m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't spit in goggles before I started, so had to stop twice to clean my lenses. Just totally forgot to do it. I felt I had a great swim, 10 mins faster than last years. I have def been swimming more in the pool, this year versus last year. Sighting I thought was pretty good, I have been training in the pool so its not totally new in Open water.
Ranked 81st/111
What would you do differently?:

Train more in open water. Remember to affix my goggles and swim cap right, ohh and one small other thing. Not swim with my Wedding Ring, becuase now its at the bottem of the lake. In all the training swimming I have done I have never even felt it move let alone come off.
Transition 1
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

wow what a horrible time. I think I was so excited/shocked that I did so well for me on the swim that I just kinda slowed down in T1. I had everything layed out perfectly.

What would you do differently?:

Get refocused on the task at hand. should start thinking about T1 on the run to it. going over in my mind what needs to be done.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 14s
  • 24 miles
  • 21.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off quite well, Got passed by a girl and as she passed she said this was the fastest part of the course, I quickly passed her back and never saw her again. Had a 16oz bottle of Gatorade and 20 oz bottle of water, still cold with ice in from freezing them half full the night before. I drank the whole gatorade bottle before race end. I drank maybe 10-12 oz of water and sprayed my head and back a few times with the last of it. With 4 miles left I didn't figure I would need anymore so I sprayed the rest of the water on me to not carry the weight.
I felt like my time should have been faster. I thought I was flying, I am kinda upset that I spend $3k for a bike and only beat last years time by 4 minutes.

Ate a Kids Cliff Bar like 13 miles into the ride. stayed in Aero the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink so much, try to push a harder gear in the wind and uphills. You can't win a race by downshifting.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I came flying up to the dismount area, I passed like 2 people on bikes coming up to T2 coasting to get there. A man and women yelled for me to slow down, as If I couldn't see the big sign that said "Dismount Here" with a huge arrow.
Thought I had a great transition ranked 21st out of 111. I have Yanks as my shoelaces and Love em! had my race belt clipped through my visor so I just grabbed it and started running. Already had a GU in the belt.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 48m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Within .5 mile I started cramping, Knew I had drank too much. I remember hearing on a podcast to only drink like 16-20 oz per hour, and I had just drank at least 28. Pushed through it, you can see from my times getting slower the first 4 miles.
finally started feeling better, had a cup of water pretty much at start of run(mistake) then didnt drink again till mile 5. Kept taking waters and dumping on head.
What would you do differently?:

Push faster starting a little earlier, didn't start pushing till about mile 5, I could have started a little sooner and maybe bumped up 3-5 places.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a Propel, then noticed my wedding ring was gone. So I looked for that for 20 mins. Finally went to pavillon and grabbed a mini bagel w/ PB and went back to transition and gathered up stuff and left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of OWS training, drinking too much on the bike limited my running speed.

Great race man! Awesome to beat your swim by 10 minutes. For a flat course you threw down some damn good bike splits in there too. That sucks about the wedding ring. My new thing when I get somewhere and forget it I have it on is to put it through my key ring on my car keys. If I lose the car keys too then I'm screwed either way.

Great job, especially improving the swim.

Oh and I'd pay way more than 3 grand for 4 minutes on my 40k

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
