Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have 2 diet mt. dews a day. I'm looking to replace them with something else that has caffeine. I have a job that can be rather boring at times, so the caffeine is beneficial to keep me focused on various tasks. I can go without caffeine energy wise, but the other effects are beneficial. Anyone successfully replaced diet soda? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, I used to have an ugly diet soda habit 15 years ago. It wasn't a 2 can habit either, more like 5-6 (shudder). I had to go cold turkey, but that's my personality. Do you drink coffee or tea, hot or cold? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not sure if it's much of a replacement, but I like Crystal Light's Energy drink. I no longer buy the powder coz one can get concentrated vials to squirt into water. There are other brands of similar water additives. I am not a big tea drinker coz for some reason it upsets my tummy. And I am not a big fan of just plain old water. Edited by KateTri1 2013-07-17 8:29 AM |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You can buy caffeine pills pretty cheap. 200mg is about the same as a cup of drip coffee. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What are you looking to get out of replacing diet soda? - No more sweeteners? - No more carbonation? - Cost? |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used to work midnight shift and I really hated coffee and did not drink a ton of soda but I needed something to keep me awake. I found that drinking a good amount of water kept me awake because I had to pee every hour or two. I would also suggest maybe seltzer water with lemon or lime squeezed in. It will give you the soda carbanation without the calories. |

Good question, should have had that in the OP. I'm thinking I need to ditch it because of the artificial sweeteners. Diet soda is the one part of my diet that is supposedly bad for me. Just want to shore that issue up. |

Throw a treadmill under that desk like Comet and you'll be g2g. |

If you like un-sweet tea it's a great option, IMO. |

If they ever find conclusive proof that this stuff causes health concerns we're screwed. But so far my VERY in depth research assisted by a really highly rated RD shows nothing but speculation, mostly coming from the sugar industry. Big surprise. The way I figure, table sugar (even when it's called "in the raw") is a chemically processed version of what comes of out of the actual plant itself. So is sucralose. I don't see much of a difference. |

If you like un-sweet tea it's a great option, IMO. I'd say all these are good, except the juice, for the reason she listed. I LOVE loose leaf tea. Green or black depending on how much caffeine I want. Go for good quality, NOT Teavana. They add sugar to most of their flavored teas! (WTF.) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've thought about giving up the diet mtn dews every now and then. I drink WAYY too much of it. Probably average at least 2-3 a day. I went off all diet sodas and only drank water for over a month last year, trying to see if I felt any different. I didn't. So I went back to drinking diet sodas. The reality is I've been drinking this stuff for 30+ years now. How bad can it be? Don't answer that. |

That's something I bring up whenever someone's asking about various drinks or sweeteners. It's ALL a matter of personal preference. Aspartame gives me a low grade headache all day if I drink anything with that as the sweetener. Bad mood, snippier than normal and I can't wait to get away from people after about 10 minutes. One day I'm going to give Stevia a shot just to see what that's like. Grocery stores are starting to carry liquid Splenda. I've used Sweetzfree http://sweetzfree.com/ for a few years now. A 1 Oz bottle lasts me roughly 6 months. |

Different palates I suppose! I'm okay with Splenda and aspartame, but I just had lemonade that was made with stevia this weekend and thought it was disgusting! I'd love to ditch my diet soda habit too to cut back on artificial sweeteners, but I just can't bring myself to do it at the moment. Maybe this winter... Edited by KiterChick 2013-07-17 11:47 AM |

Good luck with the Stevia. Tears my tummy up. GI distress is a common side effect. And the taste--to me at least--is sweet, then bitter and nasty. It's also chemically processed from it's clean state in the leaf, just like sugar from the cane. Just has less calories. Edited by noelle1230 2013-07-17 11:51 AM |

One of my friends in high school developed a stomach ulcer directly related to excessively drinking Diet Mountain Dew. No joke. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() after how many years of drinking it, and what is considered "excessive?" I know I drink too much of it, but I'm trying to compare. |

What I wonder is if you were able to give it up for a month, WHY did you start? Sure you might not have felt that different, but those chemicals are not ideal for your body! They are not doing you ANY good, they don't add to your health. None. The ulcer thing is true as well. Yeah, you might not get them, but why bother? $5,084.45-6,387.50!!! Dang, that would be a nice bike. Or vacation. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK Haley, let me see if I can answer your questions here. "Why did I start?" As in, start drinking diet soda's in the first place? My dad was (is) a diabetic, and growing up that's what we drank. I did not have the best eating and nutritional habits instilled in me at an early age. I understand the chemicals in diet soda are likely not good for me. But there are lots of things I do that people say aren't good for me, like attempt to run 100 mile races ![]() "how much are you spending?" Well it's probably a bit but not the amount you have. I usually buy 12-packs of cans for about $3-4 each. Let's go with the higher number, so that would be $0.33 per can. If I drink 3 a day (for ease if calculations), that's about $1 per day. $365/year. Not quite the same as $5-6K. If I didn't drink diet sodas, I probably wouldn't save that $365, it would just go to something else. And I already have a few nice bikes! ![]() I don't have any real good reason to drink diet soda, other than the fact that I like it. And I eat fairly well, so I don't feel horrible about having this vice. Could I do better? Sure. Will I stop drinking diet soda? Probably not, unless something gives me a serious reason to. |
