Pass It Along
63F / 17C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 37m 14s
Overall Rank = 159/254
Age Group = 44-49
Age Group Rank = 31/33
Pre-race routine:

Up around 4AM, Small bowl of cerial. Arrived a little after 5:15 and found a nice spot to set up. Got marked and chatted with a friend for a while. Found the nice restrooms inside the country club as the first stop. I was in wave 7 so plenty of time and had a GU 20 or so minutes prior to swim
Event warmup:

Not much, some leg swings and light stretching
Swim
  • 18m 43s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Determined to take advantage of above average skills this race and worked to be near the front of wave. Passed peope from previous two waves so the strategy seemed to work. Some conjestion at start gave way to a lot of open space. Improved by almost 2 minutes over last year so good start to the race.
What would you do differently?:

Keep head and chest down a bit more
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Cleaned feet, a little trouble putting on a bike jersey due to wet, otherwise, socks went on ok, shoes went on ok, and I was close to the bike out. There was good improvement over last year but might be able to do better.
What would you do differently?:

Forgot I had a gel in my Trisuit to take on route to transition and might have saved some time. Also while it was cool, the jersey was a nice to have and probably did not need it.
Bike
  • 41m 47s
  • 10.8 miles
  • 15.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Thought I was faster than this. Have felt something wrong as avg speed on bike has been declining, perhaps due to challenge to go longer distances. Stood on peddles last 1/3 mile or so to get legs ready for run. Took a GU about mile 7.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure standing helped and might just peddle in although it felt good to stretch some. Would like a cadence meter, I know I can go faster
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Over a minute improvement over last year so a really good change.
What would you do differently?:

Had a little trouble getting shoes on and missed bike rack for a few seconds
Run
  • 32m 25s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Trouble getting going although I got some encouragement from a couple other competitors. People were talking about the course being longer which might account for the added time. Bike course was the same but the swim and run might have been longer.
What would you do differently?:

Keep up the training. Improvement is there even if it is hidden by a slower time
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, drank some, ate some and moved around some. Sat during awards and finally had to get up as aches were beginning to creep up

What limited your ability to perform faster:

July training was pitiful, not sure if this helped, or hurt since the rest was nice. Some RL things came up which required resetting some yearly goals and race might have suffered some. The focus on a potential 1/2 Ironman put speed training on the back burner. Then heat and training volumes too thier toll.

Event comments:

Nice race in a great area, close to home. Will likely do it again.

I was nervous. The water was cold. The cones defining the course were so far away. When the whistle blew for my wave, I waded in slowly to let everyone else pass me.
