Or any challenge for that matter. Anyone game? I could use the motivation for marathon training.

I would be in for running, starting my long prep for Houston Marathon in January. What kind of challenge were you thinking of?

I hadn't thought of anything particular. I need some prodding to get myself running. I have been enjoying the bike and swim lately, the run.. not so much. That does not bode well for the Marine Corps Marathon!

That sounds good! I will think of some substantial goals for myself by tomorrow.

I'm in for the challenge, mine is going to be less than most, I am pretty new with my first sprint tri on 8-31. I'm thinking maybe 65-70 running miles.

A running challenge is just what I need to work on getting the mojo back. I'm in over at the 1000 running miles a year challenge, but that group has been relatively quiet as we get toward the end of summer.

My running slacked off tremendously the last two months. I am going to shoot for 80 miles this month.

Hey - that is great mileage for a sprint!!!! I never approached that til I went beyond HIM.

I want to play too, I have not walked through this month yet and redone my build up since I was so far off in June and July. I will post later. But it will be somewhere between this 65-70 and Pink Socks 100 (big range I know).

I'm in for a challenge. I've been battling back issues for almost a year now, so my running has been limited. I'm really trying to get back into it so I want to set a goal of 60 running miles and 500 biking miles. There, it's in writing so I have to do it now... right?

I will get in too but my goal will be 300 miles, I am a runner at heart and have my first 100 miler on the 17th of this month, so with the taper and post ultra recovery I hope to be able to run over 300 miles. I ran 6.2 this morning.

I agree with Scott on that is a lot of miles for a sprint tri. And I see from your posts count that you are a total newbie to the site. Welcome.

300 miles?!?!? Whoa! Can't wait to hear about the 100-mile race. So cool.

I got over 4 miles this morn and it was a good run. Over the last year, I've definitely learned how to run slow and ez. That's good but now I need to learn to pick it up sometimes. This morn, made myself step it up for Mile 2 and then Mile 3. Pleased but I've got to find the balance between endurance and speed because I was a goner after the stepped up mile 3.

Thanks Dee, you are awesome. Now, are YOU going to play this month?

50 miles to 300 miles. We have quite the range here. I am going to go for 90 miles. That should be do able. Though, I haven't run that far in a month in many, many months.

i'm going to go even lower, my goal is 35 - I have a HIM coming up (end of October) but the Planter Faciitis has been really bad in my foot lately, so i've dialed back on the running - focusing more on the swim/ride - but I switched to doing interval style training mid-way through July and it seemed to help

6.2 easy paced miles today, have to keep the legs loose. I am running a half marathon and swimming 2.6 miles in the lake for a relay team in an adventure race tomorrow. It is a great time every year.

Ok, this is completely unsolicited advice but since I was having major PF issues Nov thru March, I'm going to tell you what I tried. It may not work for you or you could be doing any and all of the things but I'll mention anyway.

1. Shoes. All shoes. Work shoes, running shoes, sandals. everything. I personally think a lot of mine was caused by boots during the winter and then some of my sandals. I did away with any shoe that seemed to cause pain and only wore ones that conformed to my feet. I probably should buy some inserts but I haven't done yet.
2. Taping the foot. I really thought it was voodooish but I saw a posting about taping feet from someone I respected. I tried it and it really seems to help. You can google it. In short, it's taking sports tape and running two strips length wise from base of toe to just up past the heel - no pressure on the tape. Then one piece of tape horizontally just under the toes - no pressure. Three more pieces going horizontally while you move down the foot - slight pressure. I still do this sometimes when running if I find that the PF is coming back.
3. Marble pickup. To me this seemed stupid but it worked. I did about 50 marbles - 3 times a day. Some people do the towel crunch too but I didn't.
4. What I call the Strauberg stretch. (There is a Strausberg sock but I never bought). Take a rope and loop around the top of your feet and pull back toward you. To me it felt good. I did a lot when watching tv at the end of the day.
5. Calf stretching. Hubby has a calf stretcher that stretches with toe upward and the toe downward. It helped.
6. Rolling on tennis ball or some other balls. Massage too.
7. In the early stages, I did the ice. And compression socks. Didn't ice as much as I probably should have but I did usually ice after long runs.

Good luck with it. PF sucks.

I promise not to tell you about all of my runs but today was different. This morn I left for a 10 miler and I could tell it wasn't going to be good. Finally I started getting into a groove (and accepting that it would be slow) and as I neared a park, I saw a LOT of people there. Some had dogs but others didn't so it wasn't a dog training class. There were young and old and in between. I asked what was going on and they replied it was a Walkabout. Some our our commissioners have set up a monthly walkabout for two reasons - get people moving and to showcase different parks. Today was 2 1/2 miles thru a neighborhood that had two small parks. They had people that led the way, people that walked in the rear, and vehicles placed at different points in case some people found it too far (which no one used). I continued my run for a short while and then decided that I needed to join them for a while. I walked with a 80+ year old woman who was adorable and a dang fast walker, a friend who enjoying the exercise, and a 2 and 4 year old. One park I go by all the time but they showed me entrances and exits I had never seen. They post in the paper, FB, and have a website. Isn't that a cool idea?

Great story and a great idea. Look at what you found out by not focusing 100% on getting "just a run" in. I worked on a non-profit focusing on stream restoration for a while. It was funny (in a sad way) that folks often only noticed the stream that was right by their homes when it was in the process of being ruined by development. All the sudden they wished they had spent some times on its banks enjoying it. Lots of times we don't take time to explore what is right in our "back doors". Pat your Commissioners on the back for a great idea!

I managed to keep myself under control on the run today, 13.16 done in 1:40:24. I did the 2.6 mile swim in some tough conditions, winds at 12-16 mph into us on the lake but still swam it in 1:35:22. A great day today. Just so everyone in the challenge knows, I made it a goal this year to run 300 every month, so far so good. That is the reason I said 300 miles.
