Subject: HAPPY EID!
Here in Indonesia, home to more Muslims than any other country, Eid al Fitr is the biggest holiday of the year, the culmination of the holy month of Ramadhan, which is given to fasting, prayer, contemplation of God, and giving and feeling compassion for the poor who are hungry every day.
So it's kind of like I'm in the middle of (if you can relate) Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's all rolled into one occasion that lasts three consecutive days.
It's family, friends, feasting, giving, and forgiving. Our traditional greeting here is "Mohon ma'af lahir batin," which means "Please forgive me my wrongs, material and spiritual. Happy Eid, and here's to feeling and sharing the love ... and food.  |
