Subject: RE: Any NFL fan surprised? Not surprised. I'd like to see a rule change. If a defensive player requires an injury timeout before the offensive team substitutes (or if the offensive team does not substitute at all), that player is out for the rest of the possession. If the play ends, the offensive team substitutes, then the defensive player goes requiring an injury stoppage, then that player only needs to sit one play like normal. If the defensive team is willing to call a timeout for the injury, the defensive player can return immediately. This may penalize players with legit injuries from re-entering the game in the same possession...but if you really did need an injury timeout, chances are you probably need to sit out the possession anyway. I think there is a lot more faking going on than the obvious. Even against teams that don't run quick paced offenses. If the defense is getting tired from the offense controlling time of possession, and you know you're coming out of the game on the next play anyway, why not fake an injury to let your teammates get a breather? The offense is already penalized with a timeout with 2 minutes left if one of their players gets hurt and the clock is running. So it's not like making a rule like this is going into unchartered territory. |
