Felt vs Kestrel

![]() | ![]() Hi Fellow Tri'ers! I am having a TT bike decision dilemma. I am looking at the Felt B12 2014 and the Kestrel 4000 Shimano Ultegra. Both 11sp. Kestrel comes in set up without pedals and comp etc at 760g less than the B12. My question is, I am a girl, I am fairly strong on the flat and can hold my own pretty good, but not that strong on steeper ascents. Will this much weight make a huge difference? Can I absorb this weight by making my bike and myself more aero? I am so confused. I really love the Felt B12 look. Its a really nice looking bike and a great package. The Kestrel is the 2013 frame, and we would change the 105 components to the 11sp Ultegra. I can't wait for Jan when the Kestrels come out as I want this bike for my first 70.3 which I am doing in November 17th. I am so confused! I can tell I am going to start getting obsessed with the weights, however understand that a bit of weight can be negated by being more aero. I am also losing weight and may lose the 700 odd grams in a couple of weeks. My first TT bike. I have been riding a 2011 Avanti Vitale for the last 2 years. Don't have much experience with bikes. Sensei ![]() | ![]() Without doing the research, off the cuff? Get the Felt. They are solid rides and probably more people on them than the Kestrel. Don't lose too much sleep about the weight. For TT bikes, earo trumps weight and most TT courses are not THAT hilly where it could made a difference. Sounds like you can/will adjust to get components about the same and it's always good to select your own pedal in most cases. But the biggest reason? You LIKE the Felt better. It's superficial, but you want to look at that bike in the garage and smile because it looks fast and cool and you want to get on it and ride. You don't want to look at someone else riding one and have any regret (if you got the Kestrel for more "practical" reasons). I got my dream bike (at the time) several years ago and even with newer, and fancier stuff coming out, I still look at mine and want to go fast on it. BTW, I personally like the looks of the B12 better too.
Oh, and to be politically/triathlon correct: "Get the one that fits".... (legal disclaimer). |

Felts tend to be long and low and many women that is not the ideal bike as they fit on shorter and tall bike. Weight of bike is not a big issue you should be looking at stack and reach and which fits you best. Have you checked the stack and reach information on bike fit on Slowtwitch? If not check it out. There are tables of stack and reach for each brand bike and each size.

It's not about your height, it's about you torso vs your leg length. Felts fit people with longer torso/shorter legs. This is why you need to get fit first. With that said I have a felt B16 (same mold as the B12), if it fits I don't think you can go wrong with it. I have also heard many stories about customer service from Felt and how well they back their products (although I have not needed any). Don't know much about Kestrel, never been on one. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't know too much about the Kestrel, but I **believe** that it fits different than the Felt. As Kathy said the Felts fit long and low. This works for some folks but not others. I have a 2010 B12 and love it, but it fits me. The Kestrels, I believe are more of a short and tall fit. Make sure you get the one that fits you best.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll echo the "buy the one that fits" chorus. I just got my fit, and it was a bit of an eye-opener. For example, I was looking at a Specialized Shiv, a Felt B2, and a Quintana Roo CD01. The QR would simply have been too aggressive for me at my current flexibility and comfort level. The Shiv would have taken a 17 degree stem and 37mm of stack spacers to get me comfortable. The Felt would take a 6 degree stem and 30mm of stack spacers to get me comfortable. Made my decision to join the Felt Mafia a whole lot easier. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll bet that 400-500g of that weight difference is in the wheels. the Felt comes with the TTR3's which weigh over 2Kg. Don't know what's on the Kestrel, but i'm guessing lighter, and far less aero box rims? The TTR3's, while certainly not the fastest race wheels on the market, are better than you might think, and start to make upgrading to expensive deep wheels less advantageous. I've heard great things about the Kestrel as well, but I"m a member of the Felt mafia. their bikes are really well sorted out these days, not only from an aero performance standpoint, but from a maintenance, adjustibility and road feel. |
