Subject: RE: WHAT THE HELL???Originally posted by Turnin2 How come the box for bicycles is in the front of the traffic line and makes the cars repeatedly pass and re-pass bikes at every light? That's gotta irritate the cars. Also, put your bike down if you're gonna fight. There's a couple different reasons for the bike boxes. They're supposed to reduce collisions between cyclists going straight through an intersection and cars turning right (or in this case since it was in England, cars turning left). They also help cyclists who want to make a left turn by giving them a safe path to the middle of the street, instead of working their way from a bike lane on the right, through moving traffic, to a left turn lane. Finally, they're actually supposed to speed up the flow of traffic, especially when there is no bike lane (like in the video). Without one, cyclists will be interspersed with vehicles, so when the light turns green a car goes, then the cyclist behind him gets started, then two more cars, then the cyclist behind them get moving, etc. With a cycle box, the cyclists will all gather together at the red light and then start moving at the same time. You have to keep in mind, bikes are a much bigger part of life over there. Higher gas prices, less urban sprawl, and they don't have the American love for the automobile means the cities go out of their way to design for bike traffic. Compared to over here where we design our streets to move as much vehicular traffic as possible, and if there's any right of way and budget left over they might paint a bike lane. I'm not saying the American way is wrong, just that our city engineers are working to please a whole different mindset than theirs are. |
