Overcast
Total Time = 1h 14m 17s
Overall Rank = 7/222
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/12
Pre-race routine:

Up early for the 1.5 hour drive over. Arrived around 6:15am. Pop tarts and an Ensure on the way over. Sipped a Gatorade and ate some peanut butter crackers while setting up transition. Was racked near most of my Team so the usual pre race banter and visiting.
Event warmup:

Short warm up run with a few team mates and then swam about half the course. Stomach was rumbling as I was waiting for the swim start.
Swim
  • 08m 39s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Solid swim....other than goggles coming off as I dove in at the start. No contact with time trial start. Sighted well and maintained moderate-moderate plus effort. Never had HR spike which oftern happens at the beginning of the swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Based on other times it looks like it was an average to good T1
Bike
  • 43m 2s
  • 16.8 miles
  • 23.42 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't feel great on the bike. From the beginning it felt hard and legs never came around. I was at AP253-255 for most of the course but faded a little at the end. Was able to guage how I was doing against the other guys near the turnaround. Time trial swim start always makes it a little tricky to know your position in relation to others.
What would you do differently?:

I was planning to really let it rip on the bike...shooting for 255-260 watts but it just was not there today. Could really feel it in the quads despite easy week heading into the race. Satisfied with the result but was hoping for better.
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

Good transition...fairly smooth.
Run
  • 20m 39s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Much like the bike this hurt from the beginning. Running on the sand and trails was a challenge. Pretty consistent pacing with first 2 miles both coming in around 6:45 pace. At the turn around was able to again guage my position. Pushed it over the last mile with what I had left. Absolutely wiped out once I crossed the line. Warm temp and humidity made it a tough morning.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing....I think I did pretty well mentally to keep pushing hard despite physically struggling.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade and water. Got busy watching friends and team mates finish and forgot to go for a cool down run. Hung around for awards and to enjoy the post race festivities.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I gave it what I had...hopefully fitness will continue to improve as the season continues. Maybe feeling like crap on the bike and run meant I was pushing my limits? I'm pleased with where I placed given the level of competition that was there.

Event comments:

Great race. I've made it 3 of the first 4 years and they really do a great job. Excellent post race food and drinks.

Gulf Coast Tri Team took top 8 places and everyone made the podium either overall or age group.

Great race, Randy, especially if you weren't feeling 100% on the bike and run. For an old guy, you fly. For a young guy, you fly. Maybe time to rethink Pop Tarts?
