Age Group Rank = 5/19
Pre-race routine:

Usual - coffee, toast and honey, banana.

Event warmup:

5 min light jog followed by gentle stretching of the calves. With a planned easy start to the race and a recovering L) calf strain I figured this would be enough - which it was.

Run
  • 1h 39m 23s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 04m 43s  min/km
Comments:

This was always going to be a 'C' race with no taper. Having strained the L) calf 10 days ago and a slow training programme since then the 'race' was even less of a race and more of a training run. Very happy that the leg wasn't aggravated and that I could up the pace over the final third significantly. Felt very comfortable at the higher exertion level. (Wore Skins lower leg compression on both calves).

5 weeks to the Gold Coast Marathon!!

0 - 10km pace: 4:50 min/km ; 151 HR avg
10 - 15km pace: 4:45 min/km ; 156 HR avg
15 - 20km pace: 4:28 min/km ; 169 HR avg

Pace shows the excellent negative split of the race.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Primary aim: to finish without aggravation of calf strain
Secondary aim: if feeling OK at 15km push harder.
Achieved both goals.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked to the car, downed a banana and a protein shake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a 'C' race - no taper and in fact was I being cautious from a strained L) calf gained in the preceding 10 days. Performed as expected.

Event comments:

Organisation of this race always seems to lack a bit of polish. Just annoying things - right from online race registration to the posting of results - that should be obvious to anyone organising this event based on their own experience of being a competitor in other races.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
