Total Time = 2h 26m 15s
Overall Rank = 926/1709
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 39/49
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 am, Bevita Breakfast Biscuits and milk, out the door to pick up Grady by 5:30.
Event warmup:

Not much as usual. Did make a great decision to go back to the porti-potties after the National Anthem. Lines had cleared out and still made it to the start less than 5 minutes after the gun went off. Good thing for chip time.
Run
  • 2h 26m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

With less than 6 weeks of training, this was the most unprepared I have ever been for a race of this distance. That being said, my goals were to 1. finish and 2. beat the time of my very first half. Without the constant encouragement from my running partner, neither would have been accomplished, but they both were. I'm more sore and beat up than any other race I've done and at the same time more motivated than ever.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose all my fitness by taking an entire month off and better control my weight through diet and portion control.
Post race
Warm down:

Could not get comfortable after the race. My calves were killing me. Very sharp, stabbing pain in the middle of the muscle belly. Tried stretching, walking, squatting, sitting, nothing made it better. Tried eating, but couldn't enjoy the food because of the pain. Finally went to the medical tent for some ice. It helped a little, but I could still feel it almost an hour after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and run base and carrying too much weight, both are things I can correct.

Event comments:

Great music along the course, awesome breakfast afterwards, and tons of support.

Performance: Below average
Course: First year race, so the course was much different from the FirstWatch Sarasota Half Marathon. Race went south out of the Van Wezel then out towards the beach . Went over the Ringling Bridge before going all the way out to St. Armamd's Circle. Made the loop then back towards Sarasota and over the bridge again. The course then went south along Marina Jack's and the bay before turning into the neighborhood by Selby Gardens. After making another loop, the course wound through Selby Gardens before backtracking along the bay and downtown. One last turn towards the beaches but going under the bridge instead of over it and then finally returning to the Van Wezel lot for the finish.

Great job on getting both of your goals! Sounds like it was a beautiful course as well. I can't lie and say I'm not extremely jealous of your weather right now :-) Looks like you are well on your way to rocking some races this year!

As for the calf pain, I hope it has gone away! Just make sure you keep stretching and definitely hydrating. I know my calves both me a lot when I am not full hydrated.

Good job, Chris.  I hope you are feeling a bit better today, not too sore. I enjoyed the course a bit more than the First Watch race.  I will be missing First Watch this year, are you going to keep training and do that one as well?

Great job!! I did my first half of the year 2 weeks ago and what I really noticed -never had race so early in the year- is the lack of training. But great start, congrats!!

Thanks, Chris. I'll be skipping FirstWatch as well. I really hadn't planned on doing this race, but I knew too many people who were. Our tri team had about 10 in the race and 1 of my students threw down a challenge I couldn't resist. I'm going to miss Englewood again because it's the same weekend as my state Athletic Training meeting. Glad to see you're still around.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
