Why Racing Events
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 24m 27s
Overall Rank = 139/346
Age Group = 35-44
Age Group Rank = 10/25
Pre-race routine:

Bagel with almond butter and cup of coffee at 5:30. Arrived at race site at 6:45. Set up transition area, and walked around to find exits/entrances.
Event warmup:

Jogged for 10 minutes, then wrestled wetsuit on. Swam a couple hundred yards off and on for warmup.
Swim
  • 16m 12s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started fast to escape the pack; relaxed the pace after the first buoy. 3rd buoy was in shadow; couldn't see it until I was practically there. Followed the mob and switched to breaststroke for a minute to try to pick it up. Luckily I didn't go off course much at all. Once I rounded the last buoy I pushed hard the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Not much; did the best I could despite the poor visibility. Maybe skip the breaststroke sighting attempt and just have faith I'd find it eventually?
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing specifically, just need to tighten things up a bit.
Bike
  • 37m 29s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 17.93 mile/hr
Comments:

2 loop course with sharp turns; lots of bikes in relatively little space. Goal was to stay aero 50-75% of time, which I think I met. Surged at times to pass on hills: not sure if I should have kept my effort level a little more consistent?
What would you do differently?:

Should practice cornering some.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Close to bike exit meant far from run exit!
What would you do differently?:

Also need to just tighten things up here a bit.
Run
  • 25m 18s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

No Garmin, but pretty sure I ran negative splits. Felt hard throughout; just had to keep pushing my rubbery legs.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing; just had to dig deep and give myself a lot of positive talk. This is my new 5K PR!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank lots of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need some more bike handling practice, but overall this was a great race for me.

Event comments:

Very friendly volunteers. Having 2 loops for the bike course was not ideal, but best the race directors could do with permitting issues. Felt proud of my effort!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.
