Swim
Comments: Either the course was long or I swam a bit all over the place. My garmin had me at 2294 yards, and taking the ladder climb out of the swim time, I swam 1:23/100yds pace which I'm very pleased with. The swim felt great. I tried to stay on the feet of the fastest guys in my age group but decided I better dial it back a bit and ended up swimming by myself almost the whole race. Transition 1
Comments: Textbook What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: This is where my race got interesting. It rained the whole bike ride. My front derailleur cable slipped loose around mile 15 and I was stuck in the little ring the rest of the way. This resulted in me spinning a lot higher cadence than I was used to. I also wasn't able to push the power I would have liked on the downhills. In the end my power was way down of my goal and I was quite a bit slower than I had hoped. And I think the high cadence affected my run. What would you do differently?: Learned a lot about bikes this day. I had a 11/23 cassette on the rear which is great for the flatlands where I live, but not for the rolling hills of this course. I basically never come out of the big ring on my rides. This course required me to switch back and forth between the big and small ring a lot. My front derailluer basically never gets used so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that there was an issue with it. Also, I should have gotten a different cassette so that I wouldn't have had to get out of the big ring. These aren't big hills, just rollers. That would have made shifting and keeping my power steady much easier. Transition 2
Comments: Don't really remember at this point. Would have liked to have been faster. Run
Comments: Started the run feeling great. Started out a little fast, took me a couple of miles to dial in 8:00/mile, which I carried for the first half of the run. The second half I started walking aid stations which added time to my splits, but I was still running the same pace when running. By the end my legs felt just awful, nothing like I'd ever experienced before. I think it may have had to do with the high cadence I had to do on the bike, but not sure. What would you do differently?: Not sure. I felt like my fitness was there for a 1:45 run, and definitely off of the low power from my ride. I need to push through the aid stations without slowing down to hit my goal times. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Equipment, but also the fact that this was a few weeks after my A race, so didn't have the proper build then taper into it. Also just overall fitness, I need to continue to build my base. Last updated: 2015-09-01 12:00 AM
