Regular 589 Wisconsin | Subject: Swim Wave Determination How are swim waves determined? Just go Ohio 70.3 and seems totally random. Sidenote: I would pay a "VIP" fee to go in the first wave. Hate standing around. 2017 SWIM WAVES WAVE # START TIME SWIM CAP COLOR DIVISION 1 7:00 AM POWDER BLUE M 40-44 (A-K) 2 7:04 AM RED M 40-44 (L-Z) 3 7:08 AM VIOLET M 35-39 (A-K) 4 7:12 AM WHITE M 35-39 (L-Z) 5 7:16 AM NEON ORANGE F 18-29 6 7:20 AM NEON PINK F 45-49 7 7:24 AM NEON GREEN F 55+ 8 7:28 AM ORANGE F 50-54 9 7:32 AM PEARLY PINK M 60+ & 18-24 10 7:36 AM NEON YELLOW M 55-59 11 7:40 AM POWDER BLUE RELAY 12 7:44 AM GREEN M 50-54 (A-K) 13 7:48 AM WHITE M 50-54 (L-Z) 14 7:52 AM YELLOW M 45-49 (A-G) 15 7:56 AM NEON GREEN M 45-49 (H-L) 16 8:00 AM RED M 45-49 (M-Z) 17 8:04 AM ORANGE F 40-44 18 8:08 AM YELLOW F 35-39 19 8:12 AM PEARLY PINK M 25-29 20 8:16 AM SILVER M 30-34 (A-K) 21 8:20 AM NEON PINK M 30-34 (L-Z) 22 8:24 AM VIOLET F 30-34 |

1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: RE: Swim Wave Determination I have no idea but it drive me nuts. Luckily for Ohio I'll be in the third wave, so only two waves worth of people to swim over the top of. Putting slower swimmers in front of faster swimmers is bad for both in my opinion. As a faster swimmer, I spend half my time navigating around people. I try to be cool about giving them space, but sometimes I don't see them and end up bulldozing right over top of them, which I'm sure is stinks for someone who is not comfortable in the water. Self seated rolling starts make the most sense, as the only slow people that are in front are the goobers that self seat incorrectly and as far as I'm concerned they're fair game to go right over the top of. |

It's a complex algorithm to determine start waves. But it the end it is meant to drive 3mar nuts! and generate a topic for discussion. |

I cannot agree more. I also feel like men should go first, for all their age groups, and them women. Even the most agressive woman will not be as bad as semi-agressive guy. I once participated in a large race where they had m-f-m-f pattern, and I was basically smashed by two guys on both sides.... And i do not blame them, as - like you said - you're a faster swimmer and have to make your way. That combination is very bad for both, fast/strong and slow/weak swimmers. |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: Swim Wave Determination If they are going to wave starts it should be based on estimated swim time, regardless of age or sex. Simple. That is the very definition of Rube Goldberg. |

Simple. That is the very definition of Rube Goldberg. They go by sex/age because that puts you head-to-head with your AG competitors. If it's all by swim seed-time, you'd never be sure if you're actually "ahead" of the competitor you just passed. In general, waves are set up to minimize the total time swimmers are in the water requiring swim-support. While elite waves are usually first, they mix EXPECTED slower and/or smaller groups into the middle to space out larger waves and expected faster swimmers. |
