Subject: COVID Recovery Experience
I contracted COVID a 3 weeks ago despite being vaccinated. While the primary symptoms dissipated within 3-4 days, I've been struggling with shortness of breath, especially in the 24-36 hours after a workout, and an elevated HR during workouts. I was curious if anyone else can relate and how long it took you to regain full lung function and a normalized HR.

Well, about 95% of the people I know, where I moved from in Oklahoma earlier this year, had Covid a month ago and half the town when I now live in Texas had covid in the past two weeks.  The Oklahoma group was a good mix of people that were vaccinated, people who had covid in 2020 before the vaccine was available, and people who hadn't been vaccinated at all. It seems to be very individual in how severely it affects people. For example, two people I know who were fully vaccinated ended up in the hospital while people I know who weren't vaccinated at all only were mildly sick for 2 days at home and have had no symptoms or downtime since. And, there was everything between these two extremes.

The high HR is consistent with what I have seen though.    Resting HR has been observed to take jumps 1-2 days before you start to feel sick or experience symptoms of covid even in mild cases.  Mild cases are not seeing lung or breathing problems after the first few days but moderate cases are seeing breathing problems and overall fatigue during workouts for 2 months or more.

I am guessing you will be through the shortness of breath and high HR in another month.

Ironically, I was hardest hit by the virus. Wife and kids faired much better - which I'm happy about.

Recovery really varies person to person, and doesn't appear to always correlate with the severity of their illness.  I generally follow the Return to Play protocol with my athletes and share it with them to help them manage expectations.  It can be found here:  https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/19/1174

I hope you're recovering well.
