Need an assist from the Scotch drinkers

Elite  2661     DC Metro, slowly working my way to NC |  Subject: Need an assist from the Scotch drinkersI like scotch and drink it every now and again, but it's not a liquor I am particularly knowledgeable on. I've had single malts before, but it's been so long I don't remember a particular distillery to even draw on. So - what I need are some recommendations on a good single malt scotch. Not looking for a cheap one necessarily, but <$100/bottle would be ideal. (I know some can get into several hundreds of dollars, don't quite need to go that far.) So, hit me with your favorites. |

My absolute fave is Highland Park 18 yr from the Orkney Islands: Named “Best Spirit in the World” by noted author F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal: The Independent Guide to Distilled Spirits, Wine and Beer, 2005), this is rich and spicy with Highland Park's calling cards of peat, heather honey, and smokiness. From the most northerly whisky distillery in the world, this single malt is as hearty, independent and traditional as the people who make it. Two others I've had the pleasure of are: Glenlivet Cellar Collection 1972 Speyside is pricy at $700/bottle, but as good, or better, is Praban 'Na Linne Poit Dhubh 30 yr unfiltered fro Isle of Skye, at $400. This one was unforgettable...mmm... |

I usually pay about 60-80 per bottle. My everyday is is the Glenlivet 12 year, though the 18 year is a great buy. If you ever get a chance, try the Archive 21 year, though it is REALLY hard to find. |

FYI the Ritz in Boston has one of the best selections I have ever tried.... |

The thing with scotch is that you really need to try a couple from different areas to get an idea for what you specifically prefer. Some will have more of a peaty or smokey flavor, some have an almost salty taste to it. Try different regions, you'll get a good idea what you like, and what you like to have it with. |

| Pro 4040 | Subject: RE: Need an assist from the Scotch drinkers I'll second the Lagavulin, it's my favourite. You can't go wrong with Oban or Talisker either. Talisker is a lot lighter tasting than Lagavulin (but higher in alcohol, if I'm not mistaken). The Balvenie 12 year-old is a nice bottle that tends to have a somewhat broader appeal than most scotches. Oh yeah, Highland Park is very nice too, that's the bottle I have open at the moment. |

Too much smoke/peat/iodine for a newb will turn 'em off forever. I'll look back in my tasting notes for my selections for newbie single malts...there were a few.

It's oak casked and then sherry casked and it was quite the hit. Personally, I thought it was awesome. Very, very smooth and full bodied, with a little bit of a kick at the end of it, but nothing overpowering. Thanks again for all the assistance - I had my list when I went to the liquor store and saw the Doublewood and was very intrigued by it *and* Balvenie distillery was on the list, so I decided to go for it. I think I'll go snag a bottle for my personal stash, and I'd definitely recommend it. |

Hey Cindy, I haven't seen it down here, but the New Hampshire State Liquour Stores used to sell 6 bottle sample packs with Talisker, Dahlwinnie etc. See if your local guy can get you one. Hey, maybe at MCM, everyone can BYOB and you can have a taste off ... hmmm ... cold night, fireplace, single malt. Life is good! |

Years ago (OK, actually the mid 90's), the guys I raced/rode motorcycles with in New England all got together for a fairly regular (ok - once or twice a year) scotch party, and everyone BYOB to someone's house. Everything was always good, at least until tasting the different scotches got everyone smashed, which it always did... I don't know how that grandfather clock just fell over... |
