Veteran 291 Charlotte, NC | Subject: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Just wanted to see who else is signed up for this event. Being a newbie I am signed up for Sunday (novice). I just started my training last week and don't know anyone else who does triathlons. I'd love to find some people in the Charlotte area to meet up with on occasion, over the next 20 weeks, for a ride or open water swim (when it warms up) or just general support. I live in East Charlotte, close to University, Harrisburg, Cabarrus Co, and I-485. I'm only 20 minutes from uptown. Edited by gygyhawk 2007-01-12 3:40 PM |

Extreme Veteran 537 Davidson, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon I'll be there on Sunday as well. I'm doing the relay with my wife & dad. If the interest in the MAP course is any indication, there will probably be a number of people interested in riding the route a few times before the race. That can be good to get you comfortable for the race. The other big thing you can do is participate in some of the open water swims at the lake norman Y. They start with a wetsuit swim in April and have several more swims in may. These are invaluable in my opinion. You'll find me at most every one that I can make. |

Master 1362 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon My wife and I are both signed up for TriLatta. It should be our 4th of the season by that time so looking forward to perhaps having a clue. (well... maybe if I had a clue I wouldn't be doing this... ) We're racing Saturday though, but I'm thinking of volunteering on Sunday since I've heard that's just as fun. And I'm now learning that several other BTers will be racing/volunteering that day too. |

Veteran 168 | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Hi all- This is my first tri as well...signed up for Sunday novice group. Started riding bikes last year (mountain biking) and got hooked. Love it! I swam for MANY years until I was 20 and still am pretty good at it....swimming with a master's team in South Charlotte..... HATE running but working on it. Would love to do the open water swims! Getting fitted for a road bike this week...terrified of it though! Take care! |

Veteran 291 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Hi! Do you use your training blog? Hope we can meet at a ride or one of the practice swims. I'd feel better knowing someone at the race. Even though it will be hectic and we may not see each other, it's a psychological thing I guess. Good luck with the bike. I'm riding my mtn. bike for this race. May get a road bike later. I've been running for about 6 yrs., so if you have questions I may be able to help. I'm not fast, just run mostly for the aerobic benefits. countregirl - 2007-01-15 7:24 PM Hi all- This is my first tri as well...signed up for Sunday novice group. Veteran 291 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Yes, I got some road tires with a little tread, I'm very shaky on gravel and I'm hoping some tread will help. Thanks for the info, I think most of the MAP riders are meeting on Sat. morning which doesn't work for me right now, my daughter has dance and I'm taking a swim class. I'll keep an eye on it to see if there are other days, or try to get out there when my class is over. tri42 - 2007-01-17 10:01 AM gygyhawk, check out the threads on the MAP race and the trng ride if you are interested. Expert 957 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Not to hijack or merge this thread with the MAP one, but feel free to PM me. I have the option of doing weekdays occasionally so we may be able to set up a weekday ride as well if there is interest. We'll also look at doing Latta's course as we get past MAP. eric |

Expert 957 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Absolutely--well, if my schedule allows---new baby due in April--and trying to work them in around my other races. Check the MAP thread for info on our ride this week. We'll be doing other rides for all 3 Charlotte courses I would guess. |

Extreme Veteran 537 Davidson, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon countregirl - 2007-01-17 4:20 PM Are you gonna do practice open water swims as well? Heather Countregirl, you may already know this, but for those who are unaware, the Lake Norman Y has Open Water Swims periodically throughout the Summer: http://www.ymcacharlotte.org/lakenorman/programs/lnwaterfront/openwaterswim.aspx The first one this year is in April, but you probably don't want to do that one without a wetsuit. Things get better in May and wetsuits are more optional. These are invaluable for getting used to open water swims. It's basically the course they use for the lake norman triathlon swim, but you can do two loops if you're in the first two waves. Tommy Edited by tzmitch 2007-01-17 3:32 PM |

Veteran 139 SC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon I'm also signed up for the Latta Tri on Sunday. I'm completely new to this sport and just started really training 2 weeks ago. I don't have a bike yet and I'm going to buy one in March. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy a bike in this area and what type of bike? Since this is my first race I don't want to spend too much yet. Thanks for the link on OWS. Mel

Master 1362 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon I'm also going to sign up for the Cane Creek race. Was wondering if anyone here did it last year. I've heard positive things about it and its sooooo close to home I can't pass. Also has anyone done Tri the Pee Dee or the Hartsville YMCA races? Both sound fun, small, not too far away and good for newbies. |

New user 11 Charlotte | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Hi there - I am not registered for the Latta sprint, but I do live in Charlotte and I'm very new to training. I'm looking for some training partners for motivation. I have a road bike, but have not done any long rides. I actually live right off one of the recommended Rocky River Rd. routes, but a) I'm too scared to ride by myself and b) I'm too scared to ride with experienced cyclists. I guess I need to goet over that fast! I am registered for the May 12 Clemson sprint. Unfortunately, I have a trip planned during Latta. I'm also interested in training with TriYMCA for the Lake Norman sprint in August. That group doesn't start training together until April. I plan to swim at either the Dowd or the Uptown (Childress Klein Y). |

Extreme Veteran 438 | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon Check out some of the bike stores near you. I know that Ultimate has rides on Saturday out of Pineville that are no drop and run from 15-19mph most of the time. You can stay in the back if its a problem riding in a pack. I too have issues riding outside in Charlotte these days, people are nuts. I totally understand where you're coming from. Good luck! |

I live in Union County just south of Stonecrest off Rea and have been doing most of my rides around home, in neighborhoods, and on some of the heavier streets, but I hear you concerns. I have them too. Check out the MAP thread cause several of us (I haven't made on yet) are planning training rides for the MAP. I swim at the Dowd M,W,F and its a great pool. Haven't been to the uptown pool yet.

Veteran 291 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Latta Plantation Sprint - First Triathlon uncfan, I live near Rocky River Rd., too. I haven't been out on the open road, yet. I thought about riding the greenway at UNCC first, just to get my bearings. If you are interested, let me know. If you want to send me a PM about meeting up and riding Rocky River route, we can meet up sometime.
