Okay, I know that you are supposed to throw running shoes out at around 400 miles, but what about a time limit?  400 miles is about a year at my current training levels.   I've had some injury, so I don't want any unneeded risk factors.

I like to replace them about 300-350 miles.  I am a bigger guy and like to have the extra cushion.  I can tell wen they are getting close when my knees start to get sore after runs.  Replace Early than latter.

Running shoes do not carry an expiration date.

I also just replaced a pair at about 325 miles. Started having knee and heel pain. Didn't know what to attribute it to. Bought the new pair and my next run was pain free.

Yeh, it can get expensive, but so are trips to the doctor...

Your mileage may vary...

A suggestion: before replacing your shoes entirely, go to a specialty shoe store and ask for replacement inserts (usually anywhere from $10-25).  My "old" shoes had about 300 miles on them, and I started getting knee pain - I added a thin insert beneath the manufacturer's insert, and the pain stopped.  Much cheaper than new shoes.  Cool

My local running store says typically 6 month or a certain number of miles (depending on the shoe).  I don't necessarily agree with the 6 month thing though.  Lets say you run for a month get hurt and can't work out for several months and then run again 3 months later, does that mean you only have 2 months left?  I would say the 6 months is more if your run pretty regularly.

Personally, I've found that I need to replace my shoes about every six months.  At my current level, that's much less than 400 miles.  After about 6 months, the padding gets too broken down and I don't have enough support (I overpronate) and that leads to being sore and almost getting injured.
