Hi,
I did a sprint 14 years ago and have started to train for another this summer. I'm looking for others in CT who may like to train together, or any suggestions for 50's triathetes. I already feel great getting to the training! I'd like to hear from you

not 50, but will be 45 soon   I'm in just as good of shape as I've ever been... however, I do wish I would have started running and doing tri's in my early 30's, because there is no doubt I would do an Ironman.  Now at this age, not so sure.

oh and I don't live in CT ... sorry, just saw that part of your post.

I guess I'll just say hi then

Thanks for the reply, always looking for new ways to improve. Running is my biggest challenge, but I'm determined! Good luck to you.

Not 50 either.  Only 46.  heehee!  Started running in 2005 and did my first tri last year.  There are so many 45+ women around my area in Ohio and they all give me such wonderful inspiration.  There is a local woman who is 52 and she just finished our local 5 mile race at 7:50/mile pace.  I think that is cool.  Another woman at the race is competing at age 72.  She did not even start running until she was 42.  She has run 40 marathons and a 50 miler in the last 30 years.  So cool!

So welcome to BT Mary!  Good luck with your goals this year.   When is your tri this year?

Hi Diane,
Thanks for the reply. It is a good challange that inspires all aspects of my life, and I'm glad I'm taking it on. I only started training 2 weeks ago and want to do the first sprint in June. If I don't feel ready there is one in September I'll definitely do.
It's great to meet you- keep in touch.
Good luck with your training!
Mary

Welcome Mary, fellow card-carrying AARP member here, 51 years old. Guess I was 48 when I started triathloning, ran my first road race on my 45th birthday after training for nearly a year and losing 65 pounds.

Best advice is to take it slow, ease into it. Us senior citizens don't recover as quickly as the young folk, have a higher tendency toward injury.

Hi Mary, welcome to BT.  I am 56 and started to train for triathlons when I was 53.  This is my 4th season and I simply love it.  Suggestions for 50's or older triathletes:

  • learn the basic techniques for all three sports, especially the swim.
  • get a trainer to teach basic techniques if necessary
  • start slowly and work your way up
  • pick out a training program to suit your goals and try to stick to it
  • if it hurts, for any reason, stop what you are doing
  • unless you are an elite athlete, compete with yourself, not some 21 year triathlete
  • enjoy yourself

Hey Mary!  You may want to keep an eye on the Regional Posts too...here is the one from CONNECTICUT as there is a good size contingent here from CT and MA.  We often get together at the triathlons, we organize group training rides or runs, and gang up at local running races too.  There are all ages and all levels of experience so there's no need to feel like a total beginner.  Everyone is pretty friendly and there's always someone riding or running at your speed too.  And yes, some of us are over 50...I'll be 59 in July and doing my 3rd Ironman this year.  Stop into the CT postings and say "hi" too.  You'll get a feel for who is out here in your area.
