Swim
Comments: It was almost a mile. The water felt good. This time I wore a wetsuit and there was no shock to the system. I would have liked to have gotten in the water before the race, but the bathroom line was so long that I didn't get a chance too. In the end I don't think it would have mattered much, I'm not dissappointed with my swim. Just getting through it was the goal and it was a dramatic improvement over my last race. Transition 1
Comments: I didn't realize it took me this long, but it makes sense. This was a point to point race and you had to pack all of your stuff in your bag so that the organizers could pick it up and take it to the finish line for you to pickup. I guess I spent too much time packing the wetsuit :( Bike
Comments: It was a pretty cool ride. I enjoyed riding through parts of LA that I normally would never go. I was surprised at the number of spectators and volunteers that lined the 24 mile route. What would you do differently?: I just picked up a bike computer and I'll start training with it. My pace was too slow and my cadence was too low. In the end, I can only improve. Transition 2
Comments: We didn't get to setup our T2 transitions. We had to checkin a T2 bag the day before the race and they dropped the bag in the T2 area and you had to find it. My bag was small and finding it was a big problem. This was the only part of the race that I didn't like, but I don't know how they could have done it differently. Run
Comments: I was dead tired for the run. I felt pretty good up to this point. There were a couple of hills that really were killers and I had to walk part of one of them. I walked the water/gatoraid stations just so I could drink the water instead of wearing it. Coming down the street to finish right in front of Staples Center with 100's of people watching was pretty friggin sweet. What would you do differently?: I really need to work on pace. My run pace was horrible. I'm not sure if it's because I worked so hard in the swim and bike portions and just didn't have enough for the run. In the end, next year I'll be much better. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Training was the only limiting factor. I was seek for about a week leading up to the race, but I don't think tha was as much of a factor as the lack of training. I've been training for almost three months, by next year it will be a year and three months. I can only improve. My wife made me feel really good calling out my name at the finish. She made me feel like a king. What would I do without this woman? Event comments: Other than the T2 fiasco, I thought the organizers put on a good race. Plenty of volunteers. I should have gotten one of the free massages. I'm kicking myself for not doing that. Oh and more bathrooms, I stood in line for 20 minutes before the race to go to the bathroom. That's a bit excessive. This was my second race. I felt I did okay given my three month training time. Next year I will be a different animal! ROAR!!! Last updated: 2004-09-15 12:00 AM
