Subject: Inaccurate elevations?
I know there have been some issues with the route tracker elevations so I haven't paid much attention to this but thought I should mention it in case there is something different happening here. I have a couple of routes stored and the elevations on one seem reasonable. On the other, a run of almost 6 miles, the route tracker says I'm climbing over 112,000 feet. I tried recalculating the elevations this morning but after 5 minutes the total was still jumping up and down somewhere between 1 and 2 hundred thousand feet so I went back in my browser and didn't re-save that version. Does something need fixing here or is this just one of those things that make you go hmmmm?

It's probably a weird elevation value in the USGS database. Can you post a link to the route so we can look at it?

Sure, try this:

This was created here on BT, a few months ago, not imported.

Yeah it's what I thought. The USGS service is spotty outside of the U.S. (go figure). It's returning bad elevations of 0' for some points and accurate elevations of around 3046' for others, so when the route tracker does the math, it sees a bunch of drops and jumps of > 3000', hence the crazy climbing number.

The good news is I've found another service for elevations outside of the U.S. that's supposedly pretty good. I'll try to get it implemented this weekend, assuming I survive my 3.5 hour ride tomorrow morning and I'm able to tear myself away from the new Wii during the rest of the day.

One thing I have noticed is that if you make your tracking points close together, you can sometimes see the exact point that the elevation starts to go willy nilly.  Then if you zoom in as close as you can get and make sure that your points are actually on the road and move them around a little bit you can get rid of some of the elevation anomolies.

It's not that good inside the US either--mine are also off
