What's up with all the Fast Old Guys??

Master  1790     Tyler, TX |  Subject: What's up with all the Fast Old Guys??So I did a small (294 people) sprint triathlon over the weekend, did well for me, and was content with finishing #7 of 21 in my AG (M45-49) and #30 overall. The official rankings show me as #6 in my AG, but the overall winner was 49 so they took him out of the AG ranking... I still know I was 7th! But when I looked at the results, this is how I would have placed in younger age groups: If I were 44: 3rd place If I were 39: 6th place If I were 34: 6th place If I were 29: 4th place If I were 24: 2nd place The M45-49 was the most competitive AG in the race. What's up with that??!!

Funny to see the overall listings, which show AG placing. 1st-5th OA are 1st in their AG as well. Then the stackings start to show... 40-44 and 45-49 stack up the fastest, often with the top 5 before 2nd or 3rd inthe younger age brackets. |

I hear ya and agree with all except #4. Lots of us spend our 20s getting an education and having lots of fun (ie, never a thought about working out). Then spend our 30s starting a family and a career (ie, never time for working out). Then our 40s wondering how we got so out of shape (ie, time to start working out!). |

That shows that it takes time to develop endurance speed and how consistency a JFT pays a lot more than any toys or magic training approaches! although we all know that us 30-34 AGers are the fastest at any distance Older guys generally:

They compile a big list of marathon results (Just about every race to be had) and every year derive a bunch of statistics from the database. (You can also get all of your race results in one place) I have only been marathoning for 2 years but both 2005 and 2006 reports show the fastest AG is 40-45. (My AG) Not too shabby for us old guys with Adult Onset Fitness. |

Two of my last three races, I finished in the bottom 1/3rd of my age group (45-49), but would have won the 30-34 age group. I still chuckle about my 5 miler where I ran a 9:15 pace. Not blazing fast, but I thought decent. Placed something like 10/12 women in my AG. Geez, and I thought I was doing good going sub10. LOL!!!!! Actually, it's all good and I LOVE seeing us "older" folks do well. It is very inspiring to me. |

As a fairly competitive 46 year old (1:17 half marathon a couple weeks ago) that attended grad school for way too many years and have been running continuously since about 1976 (this is only my second full season of tris) ...my wife and I didn't want kids.....I have a very tiny violin I can play for you younger guys to soothe your sorrows Although I have the money to buy a carbon TT bike my wife would rather have a garage for our house, so I'm stuck with a crappy road bike with stock wheels and clip-ons and still go 23+ mph in shorter races and love to pass younger guys with carbon TT bikes and Zipp discs...so there goes the money argument. Its all about your engine, not the tri toys you own. At 42, that gives me three years to build a tri base to move up to the next AG and have a slightly better chance. 40-44 seems to be the nexus of athletic ability with time and money for training and equipment. |
