Welcome to the Tour De France 2007.

Tour debutantes (newbies) and Wildcard entry, Barloworld Cycling has set itself the goal of being involved with the day to day Tour action in 2007.

The team stars one of the youngest riders in the Tour De France peloton in British rider Geraint Thomas, 21, a time trial specialist who will be hoping for a good ride infront of his home crowd in the first week with the prologue and first stage set on his home soil.

Your team line up is:

1. DMarkSwan

2. DoloresM2

3. JoshKaptur

4. sf biggestloser

5. triAya

6. wurkit gurl

7. zipp1

Please introduce yourself below including the crucial information like name, stages committed, bike/bikes you ride/own and anything else you would like to tell your team mates.

You will also need to nominate/select a Team Leader whose role will be to collect the stages committed for each rider and collect your stages ridden every Monday.

The crucial information collected by the Team Leaders on Mondays will be number of stages ridden to date, and the time ridden, and types of sessions (flat/rolling, mountain or TT). Number of stages is what counts for team victory!

Your stages must be logged in your BT Log for verification purposes, but you are responsible for reporting your weekly results to your Team Leader on Mondays, this is done by posting an update in your team thread in the challenges forum unless the team prefers another method.

The first Monday for reporting will be 16th July, the first rest day of the Tour De France 2007.

In a second I will attached to a post the excel spreadsheet to be used by the Team Leader for your team tracking, results should be collected by the Team Leader and sent to me on Tuesdays so I can get an challenge update post in the forum by Wednesday each week. The spreadsheet includes the details of any team members who have already committed to a number stages and the last date for changing this is 12 midnight your local time on July 6th

Once the Team Leader is selected by the team could they please drop in and introduce themselves in the Team Leaders thread that I will be maintaining for any upcoming questions or queries.

This is a team competition so please support your team mates with inspires, motivation and encouragement as well as pledge your allegiance in your sig line, log and even avatar!

Good natured sledging and competition with the other teams is part of the fun so feel free to stir up a bit of friendly rivalry,

Most importantly this is all about fun and you reaching your goals!!!!

So Barloworld… time to get racing! Let the Tour begin!!

Posting to introduce myself:

First, I am nominating Triaya for Team Leader. And just to note that I can't perform the duty myself (so, no nominations for me, not that I'd expect any, but ya never know) as I will be out of town and away from internet connection (on the beach) for the last three days of the challenge - so all of my rides will take place between the 7th and the 26th since I'd have no way to report them after that. much less update everyone else's stuff.

Anyway, my name is Chrissy, which is readily available in my profile so I may as well share it. I have committed for 12 stages. Would like to commit to more but knowing my schedule, I'd rather make sure I can do them all than be overzealous. I ride a Specialized Dolce Elite. She's not top of the line, but she's very pretty and quite fast. I will probably end up doing mostly flats/rolling as there aren't too many mountains in Arlington/Falls Church, etc. And I'm not sure what a time trial is, but it sounds fast which means I probably am not capable of it.

Oh, and by the way, fellow newbies....we need to WHOMP the pros on here!!!! I may not be able to be team leader, but I WILL be team drill seargant!! No excuses, ladies and gents - now is the perfect time to show everyone that we ARE awesome cyclists and can do just as much as the rest of them on their fancy-schmancy all-carbon kazillion dollar bikes (Playful taunting is cool, right )

Guardian

Name means

Ken and Deirdre team up with Take That's beefy lead singer in global domination project ... sorry, "industrial brand management" umbrella company, encompassing earthmoving, industrial distribution, "cementitious" products and coatings.

Tour heritage

Tour virgins. They're South African-sponsored and have Italian connections but, because they were registered in Britain, they're technically our first since ANC-Halfords in 1987. Go, umbrella brand managers!

In the coffers

Second-tier team in on a wild card; the budget could be less than £1m.

The boss

Claudio Corti, an amateur world champion, a consistent pro and a manager since 1990, had to put up with the prankster Mario Cipollini at Saeco-Cannondale when the charismatic sprinter was pulling off stunts like hiring strippers for press parties and dressing up as Caesar. Julius, presumably, in laurel leaves and a toga rather than a tin of dog food.

Team leader

South African sprinter Robert Hunter is the linchpin. He is a consistent winner of stages in major events and won this year's Tour of Picardie. Realistically, it's all about survival for all riders apart from Hunter.

Wild man of the saddle

Wild antics aren't exactly Geraint Thomas's line. He's a quiet Welsh 21-year-old who won the Paris-Roubaix amateur classic and was a member of the British quartet who won this year's team pursuit world championship. Highly talented, he's riding to assist Hunter and Enrico Degano in the sprints and, if possible, drape himself in the dragon should he make it to Paris.

They'll be happy with ...

Just being here is a bonus. So they're as happy as they'll get.

Fans will paint on the road

"Manage that brand"; "Be the Hunter not the hunted"; "We all live in a Barloworld"

William Fotheringham predicts

Lightweight for the Tour and may struggle but the smallest teams often pick up a stage somewhere along the line. A massive opportunity for everyone.

If they were cheese... Cheese strings

Invited to top table against all expectations - they're not in the same league as the rest. Bit of a guilty pleasure - you may fancy them but you can't really admit it. Colourful yet purists may turn up their noses.

Hey folks - I'm Josh, which you probably already guessed.  I'm work in DC, but live right smack in the middle of the DC/Baltimore/Annapolis delta.  I'm a tri-virgin for a few more days, though I have a pretty extensive running and coaching background (formerly a high school English teacher and XC and middle distance track coach).  I'm a bigger runner/rider, just about to get under 200 for the first time since high school.  I always ran on the edge of injury due to my size and "go fast" mentality (that I am beginning to lose)... and have fallen in love with my bike for the first time ever.  I am putting in so many more training hours than I ever have before, am not the least bit fatigued or injured, and my running economy and times are improving dramatically with the multisport training.  I've also fallen in love with speed on the bike... I love the whirl of green flying by as I spin or stamp my way through climbs, flats, and descents.

I also un-nomitate myself from leading this team, as I'm busy administering a weight loss challenge in the weight loss forum at the moment.  Hats off to whomever steps up, because the administration is time consuming.  But thanks as well to whomever can do it, because we all appreciate it and this challenge will be motivating!  I'm good for my rides, I promise you that (I've missed only 3 planned workouts since March).  I'm also very competitive (I like wurkit gurl's attitude already), and would love to stick it to the pros.

I'm committing to 10 rides.  My first ride of this challenge coincides with my first triathlon this saturday (the 7th), which is a funky distance with 27 mile bike (1 mile swim, 5 mile run).  The course as described as hilly and technical, though there is really only one nasty climb and one technical descent.

My real training focus during july is to get some hill work in, as I'm scheduled to run the innaugural savageman HIM in September... which has some NASTY climbing and claims to have the hardest climb in all of HIM (title formerly held by St. Croix apparently).  I'm not sure how much of that is marketing hype, but I know I need to ride some hills this summer.  2 of my rides will be training rides on the savageman course.

I ride a Trek 1000 that I upgraded to all 105 components.  I'm potentially buying a boat during this challenge (a life dream of mine for which I've been saving for 5 years), which will be hard because I need to drive to Alabama (1000 miles) to pick it up and that's guaranteed to cut into my ride time.  But no worries... like I said I'm good for my 10.  Anyway, victory champagne cruise on my new ride!

My 10 rides should be 1 time trial (my race), 3 mountains, and 6 rollers/flat.  I may substitute an extra hill workout if my legs feel up to it to make it 4 mountains and 5 rollers... does that hurt us?

Looking forward to riding with you all in spirit.  In fact, I just dropped back to our team car and got you all a waterbottle... here ya go!  I know, I'm a giver...

Josh

Hi All,
I'm Judi, live southside of Richmond with lots of rolling hills and some flats. No huge hills to climb here. Consider me unnominated for team leader as I have minimal computer skills and would be a drain on DH to have him help me with the spread sheets.
I initially said an ambitious goal for 12 rides on the original thread...I'm backing down a bit so I won't pull us down. After all, if I ride above the goal it still counts as the 100%, right? SO, I am commited to 10 rides and hope for more...
I just bought a Fuji Roubaix that has all Ultegra components and also own a hybrid Schwinn (I hate that bike). I'm planning on a lot of outdoor rides but will put one up on a trainer to get a few extra in if I need to boost my count more. Hey, it's cool we have red jerseys as my Fuji is red/black and my Schwinn is red
I've done one tri so far, had a crappy bike split (pouring rain and on the hybrid, chain fell off 2 miles in...)Have 2 more scheduled , one early August in Ithaca, NY and one in September in Williamsburg. Hoping this challenge and my friends at the gym who have taught me bike 101 (how to change a flat, dealing with presta valves...) will improve the ride in my other races.
My first "love" is a good run, I've come to enjoy a good swim session (a bad one will put me in a foul mood akin to shooting way over par for a golfer) and need to find peace on the wheels.

LETS GO BARLOWORD TEAM!

I'm Mark, I'm slow and conservative, but I'll get my rides in for this challenge. I ride a Trek 7.2FX Hybrid. I like it; I won't win any races on it, but it makes me stronger and its a comfortable ride. I put in for 7 rides which is my normal two a week. My wife and I are will have a baby during the challenge (if not before), so I figured its a challenge just to keep up. Thursdays and Sundays are my normal bike days, in case you're watching I'll blog any switches.

After hearing it wouldn't count, I did the pedal boat Monday. Who needs hills, the pedal boat will build you some power.

Hi everybody!  Thanks so much for introducing yourselves ... I KNEW this was the coolest team ever!!!

Of course we are going to stick it to the pros.  We're going to outride them AND, on the challenge thread, definitely outshout and out-annoy them, too.

Wurkit gurl ... thanks for the leader nom.  I have a raging obsession with lists of numbers, so unless someone else feels more obsessed (and by all means feel free to!) I'm happy to accept.

I'm committed to 20 stages (come on ... the prologue doesn't count).

I ride a rare vintage Centurion Cinelli Equipe bought from an LBS so inept they mistook it for a run-of-the-mill Centurion and sold it to me as such (the buyer so equally ignorant, fortunately, that I didn't get all excited about it and have them think twice).

Pic below. Those are NOT original handlebars or turtle horn : this was the bike I learned to how to ride on.  For my sake I needed cruiser bars and for others' sake the horn.

Super, super good luck to everyone ... we are in this TOGETHER and remember Wurkit Gurl has threatened to kick @$$ and take names. LOL

Heck ya! I'm not foolin' around! And just for the occasion, I bought myself this sweet jersey today (though it's actually a lot lighter purple):

I'm definitely game for out smack talking the competition (I'm only warming up if you check the thread now)... with the 100% team stage finishes to back it up.

Yo yo yo yo yo yo yo yo... yo.

Hi guys, I'm the 'other' Josh of the group, but you can call me whatever you'd like.

A little about me, hmm. About 2 years ago I was over 400lbs, in chronic pain, and very depressed. Fast forward to now, where I'm weighing in at a trimmer 276 pounds, and have completed two sprint distance triathlons. My third sprint triathlon is this Saturday, which also tends to be the same day as the start of the challenge. I have also already planned my first couple Oly distance races in early 08 and a HIM in September of 08, I am ambitious if nothing else.

I am committed to 10 rides for this challenge and ready to rock them out. I will have a variety of riding types as I am starting to veer AWAY from the local bike trails system and more into the country roads which can lead to some suprising hills and technical courses.

I am also currently studying to become a Certified Personal Trainer as I feel that someone who has been a 'bigger' person might be able to provide a unique insight into training those who may be obese/overweight.

Triaya is the perfect team leader, nothing better than a sexy and smart leader... I'll follow her anyday. *evil grin*

Woooohoooo, I love this challenge.

Team Barloworld (newbies) for the win!

hey, how did you guys get that avatar to set in? I had DH help me for an hour the other night trying to put up the finish photo from my tri (feet weren't even touching the ground and I can see those muscles I've worked so hard to build) No matter what we did with cropping it the system rejected it as too big. He thinks he might have better luck transferring the one off the camera from my 10 K in March.

Josh, I was pretty big a few years back too, one day (if we can get the system figured out) I'll post the before/after photos for you all...I'd love for my husband to move up the food chain at work so I can take classes toward personal training as well. 25 plus years in nursing (14 in the ER) have left me a little jaded towards most of the people we deal with.

I haven't been able to upload any photos from my own computer either cuz I can't shrink them enough. But Kat put the picture of the jersey up in the thread, and must have made it small enough cuz all I did was right click on it, "save picture as" to my hard drive and then uploaded it onto my profile.

We're slippin', folks!! We need some smack talk or at least friendly banter...let's see...

I for one am very excited to ride on Saturday; I am hiking during the day, but should be back before dinner, so should be able to go for at least an hour (assuming there's no rain). My bike is due for a tune-up though. Can hopefully bring it over on Sunday. Plus, I should also bike on Saturday in honor of the ex-boyf who will be flying that day to Switzerland where he is moving for a year (at least for now), where he is very excited to ride in the Alps and is going to try to get to France to see part of the Tour

BTW you should be able to post B4/after pics just by using the "attach a file after posting" option below (I'll post mine soon too).

But I still can't change my avatar either!  Tried on 2 dif. comps today, tried deleting current pic, tried just changing to BW jersey w/o deleting ... I think it was up for like 20 seconds before it reverted back. Weird!
