I did the Oly last year. The water is cold, but there were a few brave/crazy souls out there who swam without wetsuits. It is a big race, but well organized. The bike course has lots of turns and you need to complete 6 loops on the course. There are pot-holes, so be on the look-out for those. I did see a bunch of people fixing flats last year. The run is a flat, out and back course of 2 loops. It is a great course if you have friends/family coming to see you, because of all of the loops.

I have not decided if I want to do this one again in 07, but if I sign up I'll let you know! Good luck!!

Thanks Abbie! I've never fixed a flat so I hope I don't have to fix one during the race or I'm screwed...

Regardless of getting a flat during racing, you should learn how to change a tube. Just check out my race report from last year. Three people had showed me how to change a tube before, but none of them ever let me do it. Two weeks ago I called my tri shop and asked the owner if he could run me through changing a tube and then watch me do it on my own. He said, "no problem". I wanted to be sure I could fix a flat in preparation for Vineman 70.3. So I changed the tube in front of him twice and he showed me how to use my CO2 cartridge. I went home and practiced a few times and now I feel confident about it.

I'd be happy to show you or call Rob at Road and Tri Sports in Novato. He's great!

They showed me at my local tri shop but I've never done it myself so... I guess I should do it in front of them so I feel confident doing it just like you.

I think I'll be doing this one too.  I had a wedding to attend last year so I missed this race, so I hope this year my schedule is clear.  Hey Abbie, it would be great to be at the start line with you for another race!

Gina-
I was just thinking about signing up for this race last night (there was an ad for it my tri magazine). I'll let you know if I decide to do it.....I just dread doing that bike course.

I am thinking of this one as well, but the bike loops in potholes is off putting.   How bad is it?

I'm thinking of doing the sprint distance.

Abbie, what issues do you have with the bike course? Road surface? Too many turns?

Just tri'ing to find out what I might be up against.

Thanks,

Scott

The road surface is not so great. I did not flat last year, but saw tons of people changing tubes. One guy I passed was walking his bike back to transition and he had already changed tubes twice. A woman I met after the race had a friend who DNF'ed the year prior due to 3 flats! I also got a little bored doing all of the loops on the bike.

It really is a great race and well organized, don't let my opinion put you off..... as I probably will wind up doing this race again

Check out past race reports (mine's online) to get a good feel for the race and the course.

I did this last year (was my first real oly), but I haven't decided if I'll do it this year.  On the plus side, it is well organized, the location is convenient for locals, and there is no other race that time of year.  The main drawback to me is the bike course for the same reasons Abbie said.

he course was potholed pretty badly in some sections...not all, but several areas.  There was also a lot of litter on the ground as people's stuff (bottles, tires, gus, etc.) were ejected from their bike.

As she also said, the course is quite technical with 19 turns per loop (with 6 loops, do the math...) so you there are only short sections where you can get a steady pace going.  You'll be slowing down for turns and then accelerating again.

Doing 6 loops is also a little mentally taxing in its own way.  Many devise ways to remember what lap they are on.

There is a small hill towards the end of the loop and last year I believe they shortened this section due to bridge construction, but I haven't checked to see if they made the hill section longer again (still plenty of bridge work going on!).

The swim is in the bay, so be prepared for those temps.  It's in a little cove so it's protected from waves, but it's plenty cold if you're not prepared.

Run course is a flat as a pancake out and back, 2 laps.

I registered yesterday. Will be my second time on Treasure Island.

No kidding! I accidentally came off the bike course one lap early my first race at TI. :-(

Hi all, I'm a newbie and this is my first post!

i couldn't decided between sprint and oly for this one yet, but I am doing one of them for sure. I have only raced a sprint before, and a few people have told me it's not the est/most fun oly race because of all the loops you keep discussing. anyhow, maybe i'll see some of you there...I think i'm leaning towards the sprint.

Well. I'm committed now. I just registered for the sprint. This will be my third and last for the year. Maybe next year I can finish the season out with the Oly.

Good luck everybody, less than a month to go.

my buddy, poweredbyfear, and I checked out the course today.  The course is pretty different than last year.  Only 5 laps now with about 15 turns per lap (compared to 6 laps of 19 turns last year), which means one less climb (small as it was).  Road condition is crappy, but it seems not as bad as last year.  Still, it's bumpy so expect that and all kind of junk littering the course as stuff ends up ejected off of people's bikes and pockets.

Run course is also revised, shorter, so now 3 out and backs instead of 2.

Weather was beautiful today, warm and sunny, but water was typical bay chilly.

Do you guys wear something on your feet when swimming in the Bay or not? Are you allowed to?

I ran the Stinson Beach race on Saturday (on the dip sea trail) and I'm hurting today. Ok maybe I shouldn't have gone hiking for 3 hours yesterday...

The course map says 6 laps and I still see the one climb (bottom right-most on the map):

Compared to last years course:

On that note, anyone going to one of the pre-race meetings this Friday?

You're allowed to wear swim booties. I haven't decided yet if I'm wearing mine.

I've never worn swim booties when swimming in the bay, even on new year's day.

I do recommend a neoprene cap/hoodie and earplugs.

Damn! A 58,000 gallon oil spill in the SF Bay is certainly going to throw a wrench into all of this.

I emailed TriCal if/when an official announcement regarding this Saturdays race will be made.

Even if they give the 'OK', I'm seriously considering not doing the race.

This was just added to the TriCal website.

Tri-California Events is aware of the Oil Spill effecting the San Francisco Bay. At this time, the San Francisco Police Department and Water Safety has determined that there is no oil in or around Pirates Cove, Treasure Island where the swim takes place. At this time, we have approval to swim in Pirates Cove. Please continue check the website for updated information. We are planning to continue with our regularly scheduled events.

Maybe I won't need so much body glide.
The wetsuit should slide right off if there's any oil in that water.

Gavin Newsom just announced that the race is cancelled. No clue if he really means cancelled or postponed (I imagine it's not easy to just postpone events like these). Still no official confirmation from TriCal.

This sucks.
