Overall Rank = 328/357

Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

I really tried to increase my running this year as I was mostly running/walking when I did this last year. I worked up to 4 mi. on a hilly trail about 3 times a week so felt pretty confident about my running. I also walk at least 1 hr and 20 min. on the days I don't run. I was nervous about the bike this year as it is getting harder for my to get on and off the bike. My leg just won't kick over the seat as easily as when I was younger. I only got out about 6 times to bike. My swimming is always slow but easy for my so I swam several miles in July but that's all.

Event warmup:

Just got the the race site early and walked around a lot.
Swim
  • 21m 8s
  • 580 yards
  • 03m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm not fast, just steady. I swim a combination of crawl and breast stroke. I don't think that I will ever be much faster unless I devoted a lot of time to training and had a coach.
Transition 1
  • 05m 13s
Comments:

The woman who was racked next to me left her stuff all over!!!! So I had to move her stuff off my area in order to get my stuff. Irritating!!! I had to sit down to get my socks and shoes on. I just use tennies and toe clips so that slows me down but I feel more comfortable with that set up. Hey, I'm 66. This is the second year that I have been the only woman in my age group---and also the oldest woman competing---so I'm not all that motivated to learn to use the special shoes and pedals. I'm afraid that I would fall over on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Try to move a bit faster during the transition.
Bike
  • 41m 1s
  • 10.3 miles
  • 15.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Better than I expected. I passed some people and some people passed me. I didn't fall off at the end!
Transition 2
  • 04m 59s
Comments:

I mistakenly thought that we had to walk our bikes around a cone before racking them, but that was for the run, not the bike so that added to my time. Again, I had to sit down to get my biking shoes off and my running shoes on.
Run
  • 31m 29s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 12m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I really thought that I would do better on the run as I had run much more this year than last. But my legs were tired after the bike and the uphill didn't help any! So I walked a bit on the way out. Then ran the return leg. I was a bit disappointed with my run.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. I really felt that I had trained well for this, at least for me and certainly more than last year. I had not figured on being so tired.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around, ate a lot of watermelon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could probably be faster if I trained with the tri team and was more consistent about biking, running and swimming every week. But this is not my life. I feel blessed to be able to do this at all at my age. It would be fun to improve my time from year to year but I'm not sure that I am willing to put in the time and effort to do that. Maybe next year???

Great job - looks like you had a good day on the bike. That is always a nice feeling. The 3:36/100 swim split means that you averaged 3:36 per 100 meters for the race, not the 1st 100.

Nice work, and you may want to incorporate some more Bricks (bike a little, then run a little right away) into your workouts. That seems to help alot of people improve their run.

Be sure to sign up again next year! It is great that you are doing these.

Hey, great job! Don't worry about what other people do - you had fun, you probably smiled more than a lot of other people on the course that day, and you did your best!

I hope I'm still out there racing long enough to be the only woman in my age group... you're an inspiration.

I saw you either while I was running or biking and cheered at you and you smiled back, which was really nice. I love cheering for people, and sometimes they'll say something back, but the smile you flashed me was great and made me want to do the best I could. Thanks!

Congratulations on your race. Glad to see you out there!
