Subject: Timex Ironman Watches
Any good for a basic watch? Not planning on the Heart rate monitor or gps just yet (cost issues)

Timex makes many nice watches, and you can get a good one for about 30 bucks. It will probably have an 8 lap memory and tell time and not much else. What else do you really need? After my watch got lost, I just looked at the oven clock before I left and again when I came home and had a good idea of how long I ran.

LOL – I’d do that but we don’t have an oven at the gym at work.

I would just like something that’s cheap, waterproof/resistant and has a stopwatch. Telling the time would be an advantage.
I don’t need a James Bond device that will overclock my pc from 15 miles away whilst producing enough energy to light up the northern hemisphere, however I also do not want to pay out for something that dies within 3 weeks.

I had a cheap (ish) Nike running watch that was superb and did everything you mention Mike. It even allowed you to look at summaries of each lap (session) so you could see how much further you were running for or how much less time you took etc which was quite motivating. I've had Casios in the past which are also cheap & reliable.

food for thought. I picked up a base modle Polar HRM for about $45 at Sears. It only tracks HR and elapsed time. No lap or time of day but I love it. I could not justify a monitor for myself, but got a gift certificate for x-mas. It is overly simple and I am sure I will upgrade assuming my dedication and New Years resolution continues into next season. Hope this helps.

i am a def. Fan of the Timex Ironman watches. All through my training for track and, field hockey, adventure race, kayaking, white water rafting, hiking, etc it has served me well. I paid about 30$ for it and it has lasted well over 5 years. Keep an eye on what type of wrist band you purchase. Some just don't cut it. Good Luck, - KB

I'm also a huge fan of the Timex Ironman watch. I've had mine for about 5 years now I think and I feel like I can't live without it. It has the stopwatch feature, lap counter, timer with 3 different settings (the repeat timer is great for interval training), and alarm. It was well worth the $30 I paid for it. The only thing I've had to do to it is replace the battery once and replace the wrist band several times. I'm really hard on the wrist band.

Great watch for a very good price. Who needs an Oyster Rolex anyways and who can afford one...not me! The Ironman gives you the time, has a countdown chronometer, an alarm and a timer...and it's water resistant down to 100 meters in case you swim very deeply; what more do you need.

    Sold!  I just ordered the campmor ironman.  Campmor is about my favorite place on Earth.  Every time we head up to New England from PA we stop there even though it takes us perilously close to NYC.

    I won one of those timex ironman watches in my first triathlon (before you get all impressed, it was the raffle). It's been a really good watch, and you can't beat the price, but the strap kept breaking, scratching, etc., had to be replaced a couple of times before I found one I could live with. Having said that, HR monitors are super cool - if you're cheap like me, ask for one for your birthday or Christmas. Also, v. important: if you want to use it in the pool, you have to make sure you get it resealed when they change the battery. Not all shops can do this, and I was just lucky someone mentioned it to me before I ruined my watch. In the end someone very nice gave me one of the fancy Polar models that keeps time, laps, HR, tracks your training zone, etc. I love it! If it could be programmed to play mp3s I would be stylin.

    I love my Ironman watch.  50 lap counter, timer and alarm.  The strap can be a pain though.  I work in a pool so the velcro on the EZ straps fall apart and the plastic-y type bands get dried out and crack.  I've gone through 4 straps since I've owned this one watch.

    I like it - I have a timex Expedition Which does the basics – or will do when I get a new battery for it – must do that soon!! Oh yeah – and get it resealed!

    I have been shopping for an hr monitor for sometime and settled on a polar s120 but it seems to be out of stock at all the places I tried. I found a reebok for $86.00 and am pretty happy with it I am still learning how to use all the features but so far it works well. I have pushed the wrong button a couple of times and lost all the info before I got to log it. Oh well!

    Beware the Timex Ironman heart monitor, I brought 2 different ones and neither one could maintain signal from the chest strap to the watch for more than 10 seconds. Got a Polar s210 and it's worked perfectly.
