Miss. ranked fattest state in nation

August 28, 2007 02:00:42 AM PST

Experts say Mississippians need to skip the gravy, say no to the fried pickles and start taking brisk walks to fight an epidemic of obesity.

According to a new study, this Deep South state is the fattest in the nation. The Trust for America's Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention, says Mississippi is the first state where more than 30 percent of adults are considered obese.  (ed:  see hyperlink above for full text of article)...

Exactly.  That was the first thing that I thought after reading it too.  Blech.

Also, before I clicked the link, I was guessing it would have been Texas, just based on the Supersize Me movie.  I wasn't terribly surprised to see Mississippi, though.

Yes, they are delicious! If you like potato chips (salty and greasy) you would like a fried pickle slice.

You don't think it could possibly be because people in CO are generally more "active" do you?  Granted, diet has something to do with it, but lack of exercise does too.  Just sayin.

You know, I recently went out to a BBQ place that just opened up in my town and it quickly became obvious as I was reading through the menu how I had gotten to be 50 pounds heavier than I am today.

I traveled to the South (Tx, La, Ms etc.) a great deal with my old job and I ate like that every day. Heck, you can even get BBQ at the gas station there. Lucky for me, that was another life.

Now, I can shamelessly go out and have BBQ ribs once in a while and not feel like I am killing myself

I also find it interesting that Mississippi is also one of the poorest states.  Buying junk food is cheaper than buying healthy, calorie to calorie.

I'm not that surprised.

I grew up in Dubuque (moved out of Iowa in 1992).  The one thing I remember is the very active lifestyle.  As a kid, there were almost limitless options of sporting activities (and now I understand that soccer has really taken off as a major craze).  I would make some generalization about farming being a very physical activity, but we both know that in terms of population, farmers don't make a large enough part of the population to sway statistics.  I also know that there are tons of adult activity leagues for every possible sport (then again, most of them are playable with a beer in one hand).

Now granted, we now know that corn has one of the highest GI numbers for a vegetable with little to no nutritional value.  And I was most definitely raised up on a staple diet of steak and corn on most weekends.

Then again, it makes me wonder if there is any link between education levels and dietary / nutrition levels?  I wonder if the link is more along economic lines, but I just wonder...

The other thing to remember about Iowa, a lot of Iowans are of Irish and German descent, which includes strong metabolisms to allow for copious amounts of drinking beer and gaining moderate weight.  And lets not forget all the Norwegians living up near the Minnesota border, ehh?

Mississippi's public schools already are taking steps to prevent obesity.

Bravo - looks like they making PE mandatory and restricting what types of food can be offered.

and the 10th highest rate of overweight youths (ages 10-17) (BOO! )

No.  It's the thin air.  Breathe thin air, you are thinner.  The air in Mississippi is obese, obviously.  Duh!

Yep. Even the "bad" (snowy) weather there drives people outside to ski and snowboard. Here it's just muggy and miserable and only the insane triathletes, cyclists, and runners venture outside in the summer!

I wouldn't put too much stock in the mandatory PE thing. One of my coworkers took her elementary school-aged kid out of public school in part because their "PE" involved watching movies.

Though I do think there is a larger population of fit, healthy "outdoorsy" folks there than in Mississippi - I have a friend who just moved there and has attested to this statement. She has met a lot of people who are of the teva-wearing, yoga-doing, tofu-eating variety. That's pretty common in mountain-y states - wilderness brings out the healthy-pants in people, it seems. NH, VT and Washington state all come to mind as well - I've spent plenty of time in the former two and know several people from or who have moved to the latter, who enjoy that kind of thing - and that's why they went there. I bet none of those states are terribly high up the list of fat states.

Well, obviously just requiring PE is not enough, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Evidently at least some schools are in need of a state-mandated PE curriculum (eg. the school that you cite above).

Our PE was mandatory too, all the way through high school but by junior high, it was a joke. At least as kids, they did a fairly decent job of keeping us running around. From 7th grade on, you just stood there unless you were a junior varsity or varsity athlete. They need to make it fun too - but that's another thread.

ah, my lovely home state, the place I lived in for my first 19 years.....

ahhhh!!  of course i"m not surprised.   AT least we're number ONE at SOMETHING!!

I always get sooo bloated when I visit there.  Fried pickles, beignets, po boys, crawfish, shrimps,  tons of family food that my nana makes,  and onandonandonandon.....

But, on the other hand, they have some pretty fast folks out there.  Last time I visited, there was a 2 mile run.   Results are HERE.

I don't think I trust any study based on BMI. A few months back I was doing a lot of rock climbing and putting on some muscle. I have never in my life been overweight, and when I don't exercise I just get skinny because of my metabolism. I am 6' 1" and was at 190lbs, less than 10% body fat and my BMI number put me as overweight.

The whole study is highly suspect to me. That aside, I do believe obesity is out of hand and I see that even living in Colorado at the base of the foothills where snowboards are more abundant than fried chicken.
