I am in the market for a new bike. I have only owned mountian bikes in the past and am currently riding a GT mountain bike with kevlar slicks. I have narrowed my search down to these two bikes and would appreciate any advice. The big differences I see between these two are that the TREK has ultegra rear derailer over the GIANT 105, but the GIANT has this combo carbon fiber/aluminum frame. Any input would be appreciated.

Ride both of them and see which one fits you better/you like better.  There's no point in buying the "better" bike if it doesn't fit you well.

See which fits better.  I have a Trek 1500 ('05 model) and love it.  It's taken quite a beating over the last couple of years and is still working just fine.

Components aside, the real biggest difference between these two bikes is that the Giant uses compact geometry while the Trek does not. It all comes down to a fitment issue. Try them both out and see.

I have a Trek 1500 ('05) as well. I rode/tested a bunch of bikes (Speciallized, Cannondale, Giant, etc.) at my price point which was 900-1000. I liked the Trek because of the feel... Almost all bikes at the price point have carbon forks and seat posts, ultegra or 105 componets.

You need to find a store that will allow you to jump on a bike and allow you to spin it for a while. You are not going to get a great feel for a bike on a 2 min jaunt around the parking lot

Definitely ride both....it comes down to personal fit and comfort. I, myself, just bought a GIANT Trinity A1. The compact frame is a must for me given that I have shorter legs than my torso. I had difficulty with the Trek because of the upper cross bar. I did like the combo of the alum. and titanium.

(I don't know this for a fact....I heard this from a coach/triathlete/salesman.......he said that most bike frames are made by GIANT and labelled for that company. i.e. Trek. I don't know that Trek's frames are in that group of companies that GIANT manufactures for our not.) One of the reviews I read about the GIANT is that you get the Trinity A1 and do upgrades (all at once or when you can afford to.

For normal wear and tear, GIANT does stand behind their frames.....I was told not to get rid or sell my GIANT TCR 1 which I bought 4 years ago......I bought the bike for $2250..... the replacement frame equivalent only is $3000 plus according to the LBS owner.

Again.....ride them both and best of luck. You will know when you have found the right bike.

Well really you can do that with every bike. Every component on any bike short of the frame can be upgraded. In reality it's very expensive to do so. Upgrading the derailleurs for example can cost just as much as selling the old bike and buying a new one with the upgraded components already installed.
