Subject: Stolen Race Bib -- by a POSER!!!
OK my friend Sophia, a sub-3 hour marathoner, showed up late because of unforeseen circumstances to the Chicago Marathon on Sunday. As she rushed to pin on her bib and her chip, the second bib they gave her (they give the fast people front and back bibs, apparently) fell to the ground and was pretty much swept away by the crowd. She didn't worry about it since she only needed one to compete and started the race way behind. Sadly, she experienced a bad start and had some medical issues -- not heat-related -- that forced her to stop at mile 12.

So anyway she went on marathonfoto.com to see what few photos of her they may have taken and lo and behold there were photos of some guy wearing her lost bib!!! I verified HER number on the marathon web site that shows her splits until she finished and then zoomed in on this guy's bib to verify that she wasn't just imagining things, and sure enough, he's wearing No. 288!!! This is from the Chicago Marathon site:

Sophia XXXX | Bib # 288 | Chicago, IL - USA | Age 31 | F

Check it out:

First off, why would you do that? To look cool like you're fast? You'll be found out when you don't run 6-minute miles, so why even bother. What a poser. She's fairly to moderatly upset that some guy STOLE her bib off the ground even though it doesn't really effect her time or anything, but still, who would do that??? Really -- she said she's more amused at the poser than anything.

PLEASE don't let it be anybody from BT! My heart would sink.

The dude was probably running bandit and figured he wouldn't get pulled from the field with his found #.

Still a punk though..

pretty funny...

also, why anyone would want to bandit a marathon is beyond me.... that seems like such a waste, unless it's a training run for an ultraUndecided

He was probably just trying to return the bib to its rightful owner and found that wearing it was the easiest way to carry it.

I can't tell if her name is on it, but is the red coloring a special indicator for a woman competitor?  If so, that would be hilarious!

Duhhhhh, why is everyone pointing at me and laughing?

Sadly, as a student in Boston I used to know a lot of people who would bandit the marathon.  As far as they were concerned, they'd done the Boston marathon.

They did it just because running the marathon was the thing to do, and a lot of people just didn't know any better.  Back then I didn't know better either.  You could either BQ or raise money for charity to run with a bib (both of which seemed nearly impossible), or "bandit" to run without -- that's just the way it was.  The disadvantage was that you didn't get an official time, that was it.

And most bandits DO drink the water and Gatorade without a second thought -- another unfortunate reality that RD's of big races have to consider.

So race `bandits' are common??? I guess that makes sense. OK so maybe the guy's an innovator, not a poser. I have him all wrong. My bad, dude!

Not an innovator, just an everyday small-time thief covering his tracks.

Something does not make sense:

If he ripped off her bib, all this would get him is entry to the Elite Corral at the start.

A bandit would not have a chip an so would not be registering times with the chip timing system.  If he was a registered participant who just swapped bibs, he would have been registering times under his own chip#, and not hers.

I wonder where the times came from...

Still and all, what he did definitely does suck. This does of course affect her because the results will be posted on Results Aggregators (Like MarathonGuide and Althlinks)

Never Mind

The Results only show times through the 20k mark where you friend dropped out.

It is only the Race Photos that show this clown posing as your friend. (That makes much more sense)

The times came from Sophia as she was wearing the chip and the other #288 bib.

yeah. I would taken it to get into the fast corral so I would have had enough time to get past the I think was 3 hour cut off and "finish" the race.

yeah I known people who ran bandit and franly I want the credit. yeah you did it and you know your time but hey how do you really prove it? plus it is illegal and potentially dangersous.

My half marathon I did this year was won by a bandit. he felt so bad because he won. that race is easy because its cold most do not wear there bibs on the outside.

Race bandits tick me off. There is a lot of hard work and expense that goes into directing a race, and if you don't want to pay a fee to race, don't think that it is ok to steal your entry. It cheats the race and the other participants.
As punishment, I think all bandits who are caught should have to clean the port-a-johns after the race

In regards to the red bib numbers, they were given to the top 100 times submitted.  They got entry into a special tent before the race and access to porta-potties with no lines.   Each of them got two bib numbers.

Also, the red bib numbers got you infront of corral "A" and behind the elites.  The elites had orange bib numbers btw.

I think it's awesome that this is how he chose to bandit (FTR, I disagree completely with banditing), short of not having a number, how muh clearer could the guy have been advertising "I am a bandit."  I mean, not to judge a book by the cover, and maybe the pic is misleading, but look at the guy.  He ain't no "top 100" racer

Yeah, good thing you weren't judging the book by the cover.
