I just got a massage today because I have really tight muscles. I know running really tightens them up but the question is how much does that bike tighten them up?

I tend to have tight muscles all the time so not sure how tight they will get.

Should I be ok or should I jsut warm them up and stretch them more?

I have a 50k this weekend so I want them nice and lose for them.

I have a massage therapist who I hire to ride along with me because my legs get REALLY tight when I ride so I just have her rub me down every 10 or so miles so I can keep going. It's great because I'm so refreshed I can catch up before having to stop again. I could stretch more or ride lots, but why should I when I have a LMT riding along with me. You should look into it, it's only like $250 an hour and rides usually don't last more than six or seven hours.

Try working these into your regular routine:

Active stretching
Massage - The Stick, foam roller, etc.
Static stretching

I think that if you lift more and can therefore bench press more, that will loosen up your muscles for the bike.

I just got the trigger points and it hurts like there is no tomorrow. I thought the massage would be less painful. I was wrong. I am looser I just do not want to too tight for the 50k. Its a long ways to go in a day. Good news if I hit the bike I will easy break 10 hours this week in training. .

Yes. Someone clued me into a research article about how The Stick is good for warming up as well. So, I've gotten in the habit of using it (albeit lightly and not for very long) before my rides and runs, and I do feel it helps to use it before workouts. I still do my active stretching routine as well.

And to everyone else, be nice .

You should hire her. She's awesome.

And let's just say that there's always a happy ending.

So was mine at Lifetime fitness. She was like you can be happy now because you can stop crying.

I'm not very good about stretching, but I've been sore and tight lately so I'm doing that more often.  Stretching every day (whether I'm training or not) has helped with that a lot.

So, I would recommend that you keep stretching if your muscles are tight.  A massage isn't going to do much good if you're not also stretching on your own.

I get a massage about 3-4 days before a race.  It's more of a stretching massage vice deep tissue.  Make sure you get someone that knows what they are doing.  But it's not going to do you any good unless you are stretching on your own as well.

Also, you have to ask what muscles tighten up.  On the bike, in Aero, your traps will tend to tighen up more.  While running, your muscles shouldn't tighten up rather than fatigue.  It's after the exercise that they generally tighten up.

You have a 50K run or a 50K bike this weekend?

I have a 50k run. I blew my tire out 1 mile into my ride so I ended up doing push ups and sit ups and stretched. My knee does hurt today. hopely the pain will be gone by saturday morning (race day). I am actually limping today.
