Veteran 288 Austin, Texas | Subject: Another TAT thread but for MARATHON TATS I will happily be doing my second marathon this feb in Austin. I dont have any tats and have made it through almost 30years without any. i've had many piercings and colors of hair (hot pink right now) but never a tat because of the permanency of it all. When I finish this next marathon, my friend and I both want to get a small tat on our foot that has to do with the marathon. Neither of us has been able to figure out what we want yet. I'm not sure about putting the 26.2 on it because i'm not big on numbered tattoos but would if it looked right and not like a prison number. Any suggestions ya'll?

I like numbers. I'm probably going to do something stupid like `26.2' and `70.3' and `140.6' and (m-dot) as I finish them. I'm thinking of having them on the back of my calves, but that's SO cliche. |

Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: RE: Another TAT thread but for MARATHON TATS Its not the same as a Tattoo, but when I finished my first marathon, my wife got me cufflinks engraved with "26.2" and "1-7-07" which was the date of the race. But that's more numbers for ya... |

Master 1420 Running trails in S. Not to discredit your accomplishment, but a tat for a marathon seems a little over the top. To commemerate the event I would rather display my finisher's medal or collect my race t-shirts and have them made into a quilt. |

If it wasn't there when I was born, then it doesn't belong there, I say. I have the bling-bling, the pics, and the clothing to show off my accomplishment - less intrusive. |

Pro 4292 Evanston, | Subject: RE: Another TAT thread but for MARATHON TATS The winged foot idea above sounds like a good one. Or else a "runner" image. I'm not sure how to encapsulate the specific distance without using numbers or words. Winged foot inside Texas/LoneStar symbol? |

I agree. Now please tell that to the hair in my ears and the new "sprouts" on my back. There ought to be a rule.... I've seen a lot of people get tats for marathons - if the event is meaningful for you and you want a tat, get it. Here are a couple associated with Austin's marathon that I like:

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Another TAT thread but for MARATHON TATS The tat is right above my right ankle, and unfinished (I think I'll put an AIDS ribbon wrapped around a plumeria in the middle of the turtle ...) Turtles have always been special to me, and one brushed my leg in that spot when I was in the water before the marathon. Plumeria are abundant in Indonesia, where I'm from, and I often wore them for fun. And I run marathons to raise money for AIDS Project L.A., so there you go. If you're wondering why the lettering is so bad (I'm sure you're not!), it's because it's my own handwriting and I did it myself. OW! So ... I'd pick something meaningful for you and also that's specific to the marathon(s) you've run. Nice generic advice, huh? Are you Texan, btw?

Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: Another TAT thread but for MARATHON TATS My suggestion is to come up with a design that you like, and then tack it up on your wall for a year. If, at the end of that year, you still like looking at it, then by all means, have it marked on your body (you might try having it done in permanent marker first, just to make sure the idea of having it ON your body still works for you). Tatts (and tatt designs) done on a whim usually end in regret. |

Veteran 288 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Another TAT thread but for MARATHON TATS Thanks for the great advice. I'm trying to discourage my friend from falling in to the asian character pit. she said she may do a character that says strength. i find it funny because i just heard this great Chinese comedian about how he has a tattoo on his arm that says "i dont know Chinese" in Chinese. i'm taking the advice of posting my ideas up and seeing what i like. i did the per marker think for a while when i wanted one on my inside wrist. i'm not ready for that commitment. now i'm leaning towards the words "twenty-six.two" on my right outer foot. when i do a marathon in ireland, i will get it written in gealic "fiche a se.do"

I'd still rather drink and smoke.... |

At the Ultra this weekend the chick than podiumed for the 50 miler had a bracelet-like tat around her ankle with a 26.2 on the outside. Congrats on your first and good luck on your second. |

I disagree...to some a 26.2 mile walk is a huge....HUGE accomplishment and can mean a whole lot more than just some really long walk. I see marathon tattoos all the time at races. I have thought about getting one...oddly enough it was going to be the wings on my ankles...which seems to be popular. Now I am waiting for my IM....but that doesn't deminish anyone elses accomplishment. |
