How's everyone's bike volume coming along? (and before you go looking at my logs, I keep track over at workoutlog.com for my coach rather than BT...too much hassle to do 'em both).

So far, I've had a bunch in the 40-62 range, and a few in the 70's (was supposed to do 80 a week and a half ago, but cut back to 70 due to dangerously hot conditions in St. Louis). I've got my first century this weekend *gulp* ...let's hope I survive.

Im no expert but you sound right on target. im rebuilding after a wreck and just did a 50. going for a 55 tomorrow. one long ride with gradual build (10%) per week, one moderate (42 this week) and one shorter faster ride (26 for 1:15) is pretty much my system right now....

good luck on the century. there are plenty of threads throughout BT on how to manage if you have not done one yet. report back to us.

I'm just pushing into the 70's for mileage rides will do 4.5 hour ride this week and it has been pretty hot here in Oregon as well, whoda thunk it. It was 93 for today's ride and suppose to be 99 manana. Still out on the bike you kind of create your own breeze so the temps haven't held me back yet. I did Lake Stevens this weekend and took 52 minutes off of my best half ironman time. I was screamin' inside at the end since I was watching my times the entire race. I finished so soon my wife hadn't even thought to bring the 5 kids down to the finish yet cuz she thought it would be another 30 minutes or so.

My coach keeps telling me you don't have to put in as much time as you think or want to but it's hard to fight the feeling that you just aren't going to be ready, anyone else have that? I suffered through an overtraining type of injury in the first part of the year so I'm sure that is part of why he keeps telling me that. I don't listen too well though.

Anyway, decided I will get one more half in September at the Black Diamond race in Washington state just to have the training day at race intensity. It really seems wierd on some training days it's like pulling teeth to average 17.5 mph but in the race on flats I was able to keep up about 20mph and the hills didn't feel too bad so I feel like I'm getting there.

Keep up the good work everyone!!!

I have also decided to do another HIM in Sept. I havn't raced since oceanside and I want to keep my transitions smooth and practice nutrition.  For oceanside I used xlab and 1 frame cage.  I left T1 w/ 1 empty bottle in the frame with just powder.  I think ny nutrition stops were just about perfect for a HIM (check RR is interested).

Still havn't broke the 60 mile mark but I have a 4hr coming up so I should have it then no prob.   Using the BT plan...it doesn't seem like too much running though.

Volume is going up and training is going well. Rides are up in the 50 and 60 mile range and won't go up much until I hit September. Run volume is going up and I'm feeling pretty good about it.

My focus right now is getting enough sleep and getting nutrition in check.

I'm waking up at night hungry these days. If I eat too much and too close to falling asleep I don't sleep well but if I don't eat enough I'm up at 2 and my stomach sounds like it's eating itself. I'm eating 5-6 meals a day base 2000 calories and extras based on training volume for the day. Any ideas?

I'm waking up too Jezzieswims. But not because of hunger. More because of nerves. Overall though I am eating double before/during big workout days and trying to control portions on regular days. I still weigh in every morning because I don't want to overdo it. Have you thought about seeing a sports  nutritionist?

My swim coach is a grad student in dietetics and I'd be willing to share the info. I paid her for if anyone wants some ideas on snacks etc. Just pm me your emails. She wanted me on at least 3000 cal per day, more complex carbs, healthy rounded meals, etc.

and to Greg
I am like you in that I always like to overlearn and overprepare so I don't leave things down to chance on test/race day. Thus I overdid every workout since I registered. However, listening to my coach and body have become the wisest things I can do during this process. It was ok before to deal with pain, but not now, as we all want our bodies to get us to the start line in one piece so we don't get a DNF...

I'm new to all this too, but along the lines of nutrition, the waking up hungry happened a lot to me during HIM training and marathon training last year. I used to keep a banana on my night stand, LOL.  Not so much this time. I have been better at eating well all week esp the 2 days before a long ride. I'm eating at least 3000 calories/day, even on days when I am not training hard. Weight has stayed the same, so it must be OK. I'm not even hungry after long rides anymore due to eating/better nutrition on the bike.

I hear ya on the getting enough sleep!

2000 calories doesn't sound like very much for someone in IM training.  I like to eat a hard boiled egg just before going to bed.  For me this usually works to keep the hunger pains away so I can sleep.  Not many calories, no sugar, and just enough protein.

I'm eating a base of 200 calories daily, then extra calories for the workouts for the day.

Example. 2000 cal base for Saturday plus 1800 extra for long bike, 20 min T-run and 30 min swim.
You would think that feeling hungry all the time would translate to weight loss and lowered perfomance but I'm not running into either problem.

I sent an email to my coach and will see where things go but I think a small snack right before bed would help.

Hey all! I finally got a house rented in Tempe. I want to have a get together the afternoon the day before the race or possibly Friday early evening might be better. I can't decide which.   There's a BBQ and you bring what you want to cook on it and/or a side - you know a potluck-ish casual affair. Is there any interest in that?  P.S. There's a pool there too.

Sounds great to me and will be good to meet others before the race. I think the group last year did early Saturday afternoon?

Is anyone else going to the pre-race dinner on Friday(?). I had forgotten we even registered for that. Are there any details available on where it is and what time?

I completely forgot about the Friday night dinner.   And yes, there was a gathering the day before the race and a lot of folks showed up for it. It was a lot of fun.   So Saturday would probably be a better day for this.

Thanks for the reply.

It sounds like everyone is doing some great training!  I'm mostly on track, but really need to get my butt in gear with running.  It's the part I like the least and I'm not very good at it.  Which means I should run more, but it doesn't work out that way...

My longest bike has been around 70 miles, with a handful in the 60 range.  I'm using Don Fink's 30-wk plan and I don't think I'll hit 100 miles until late September or Ocotober (unless I go longer than the plan), which worries me a bit.  Also, I'm getting married in about 3 weeks, so I'm going to have some challenges getting workouts in around then.  It's hard enough right now with all of the planning...and this job thing.  :-)

Dolores, Carise and I are in for tomfoolery whenever that may be.  Thanks for the invitation!

I haven't given much thought to the goings-on of the weekend yet, if you can believe that.  I just started a new job as a bike mechanic/jack-of-all-trades at a local tri/road shop and am loving it - but it does keep me busy.

I am also in the process of building my new bike.  My Cervelo P2C was stolen a few weeks ago, and I decided on a Felt B2 Pro to replace it.  It arrived a few days ago and I throw it in the stand after hours and get some work done.  We sell a fair amount of Felts at the shop, so the more experienced guys know the tricks to keeping the Bayonet stem/fork from creaking, and I also pulled the cranks and BB to re-tap and re-face the BB shell... because I'm anal like that.

Training is going well.  It's easier to do when you're surrounded by Type-A tri peeps all day.  They GET it and are totally supportive.  My wife has been great, too - not letting me slack off when the alarm clock rings early or I don't feel like riding for hours on end!  I need to swim some more, but my real thrust is getting in all the bike miles so that I can get to the run in a good time with fairly good legs.

Congrats on the new bike Dave! I just got the Felt DA to replace my old Aluminum B2. I loved that B2 (my hubby will ride it now). I am nervous about getting a new bike this far into training because my B2 was awesome and we've done so many miles together, but I love the smooth, light carbon. I did 2 short rides on it this week and have a 5 hour ride on saturday. I got the 2008 DA with the Vuka aerobars so that part of my bike feels different. I posted a pic in my blog

Looks nice!  I like the grip (or lack thereof) on the Vuka base bar.  Does your Bayonet creak?  There's a pretty easy solution to that.

I would love to meet up with people as well! Probably can't make a Saturday gathering b/c of the number of friends/family that will be coming into town to spectate (I'm lucky to have some awesome supporters!), but group swims, rides, and the athlete dinner would be fun!

I will be out in Tempe again this year (as usual) for the race, probably coming in on Friday night, stayin' til Monday morning.  I'm not sure where I'm gonna stay though.  Any of my AZ peeps willing to put up a traveling Q for a couple days?  I would be willing to trade my sherpa/jockstrap services for a room for Friday, Saturday, Sunday...wouldn't you love to have your own personal IM jockstrap for the weekend to get/do/help with anything you need??  Especially one that's done the race???  Just think...you want a cheat meal after the race?  I go get it.  At midnight.  Yeah...I'm shameless.  And cheap.

Also, planning to do a nice long run on Saturday after the volunteer meeting if any other non-racers wanna join me.  Two loops of the run course is the target.

I'm up for any BT gatherings we can muster too!  I'll bring the camera.
