I'm sure carbonation is partly the reason for the craving. But I think it's actually the feeling of fullness that I want, with flavor a close second. And the sugar and caffeine give me an instant feeling of being more alert.

Hot tea gets close to the feeling full requirement but lacks a little bit on flavor. I want to get a few more varieties because it gets boring to me. I also thought of possibly buying a juicer. That way I can create my own healthy juice without additives.

I've also wondered about why people seem so quick to jump up to the longer distance races. I really want to do them to, but don't see it happening for a long time. I'm enjoying sprints and maybe in season 4 I'll consider upping it to an oly.


I can't really explain. When I did a 5K, I wanted to do a 10K. When I did a 10K, I wanted to do a half-marathon. And when I do, I'm sure then I'll want to do the full marathon. Similarly, when I did 50 miles on the bike, I wanted to do 75. But I can't really say why I want to run or bike farther rather than focusing on faster.


It's funny...I'm more conscious of the progression in distance in triathlon than in running. When I started running seriously again in 2005, I decided to jump right to a 10K for my first race, which was a distance I'd never done in my life. Then I did a handful of 5Ks...then jumped into a marathon on impulse. It was a year and a half (and one more marathon) before I ever tried my first half mary.

But with triathlon, starting out, I did three sprints, then two Olys, then a half. And a year after the HIM, I'm planning an IM. How boringly predictable...

oshunluvah = ocean lover - I'm in New England, Massachusetts specifically and we are notorious for dropping our "r's' or "ah's" as we like to say them.  But I truley do love the ocean and have always lived at or near it.  Unfortunately, because it's the northeast US the water is wicked (another Boston habit) cold so I'm a light-weight at swimming.  But that is soon to change Wink

This is a tough topic for me not to climb up on a soapbox about. I don't drink any sugared sodas if I can possibly avoid them. I do drink Diet Coke for caffeine somewhat frequently, but non-diet sodas (as I imagine everyone here is aware) are implicated by medical authorities pretty uniformly as huge contributors to the obesity epidemic. Along with ice cream and French fries (which are not only fattening, but possibly carcinogenic due to acrylamide content from the deep frying), sugared sodas are on the list of things I've almost 100% given up for weight loss/maintenance.

(And a physician friend of mine told us over the holidays that he felt women in particular should avoid caffeinated sodas...wish I could remember the specific chemical he was warning about, but I can't right now.)

There's some disagreement about fruit juices and obesity, but if you aren't adding sugar to the juice and aren't consuming in large quantities, 100% juice has shown some linkage to healthy diet maintenance.

I'll bet she pahked the cah in hahvid yahd.

I don't drink soda of any kind but my partner does and I get the addiction thing with it.  Maybe the flavored carbonated waters would fulfill the same craving???  I don't know, I'm more of an unsweetened cranberry juice or water drinker.  I know, boring. 

I get the biggest boot out of my wicked pissa nickname too!

I have consumed an uncountable number of diet cokes and french fries in my life. I'm so screwed!

Well, first bit of good news...I'm halfway to this week's goal. My motivation is doing well and I've already done a run, a swim, and a ride this week. Woo hoo!

Second good thing is that I just signed up for my first race of 09 which is the Surf City 5k. Can't wait to race again. I haven't raced since August and am getting antsy.

Surf City 5k is in Huntington Beach, February 1st.  I'm there, too!  I'm actually going to go balls out--excuse the term--on this one, which for me might be like an 8 minute mile.  I want to really work on the 5k part of a sprint tri ...

Jocelyn, very excited to meet you so let's be sure to hook up.  My last attempt at meeting BTers at the Day at the Beach tri in Hermosa was a miserable failure ... tough meeting people that you have no idea what they look like!

Hey everyone,

I know I have been MIA since new years but things  have been kind of crazy for me. I know have an 8 week old australian shepher puppy who delights in being a little terror, so I have had plenty to keep me busy. I will be weighing in ona  couple of the topics that have been bouncing around on here the last few days in a few minutes.

 I just recently decided to give "Gallowalking"  a try. For anyone who has been thinking about it, I highly recommend giving it a shot. I have only done one run so far but wow what a difference. I did 3 miles and felt like I could have kept going. I only ran about a minute per mile slower than the fastest pace ive ran, and i easily could have gone 5 miles. The trick is to enforce the run/walk intervals. It managed to keep my hearrate under control and allowed me to keep up my pace the entire run.

Ok, now for my 2 cents on a few topics:

Weight Loss:

I am a compulsive scale user. I weigh in every morning. I agree with other people in this thread that you cant look at daily fluctuations, but I'm a numbers person so I need something. I put my weights in a spreadsheet and use a smoothing algorithm to smooth out the high and lows. Its a technique similar to what is used on stock prices. As long as my weights are consistently below that "trend" line, my weight will slowly drop. If anyone else is interested, I'll be glad to link you to it.

Diet

I've been trying to drop weight for about the last 4 years. It finally really happened for me this summer when I completely changed the way I ate. I was making dinner almost every night and maybe once every two weeks. I think that to make any kind of diet sustainable it has be a lifestyle change. I refuse to make anything completely off limits because that is what leads to falling off the wagon. I want to have a beer, I'm going to.  If I'm going out to eat for a special occasion, I might have a larger meal. The trick for me was to keep my calories under 2000 on most days.

 Soda:

I used to be basically addicted to Diet Pepsi. I was drinking at least a 6 pack a day. I've cut it down to a minimum now, but there are times when one just sounds good. 

Goals:

I am a goal oriented person, not a process oriented person. I can't work out just for the sake of working out and getting in better shape. I need a long term goal to get me there.

I was really thinking very seriously about running that 5K...in spite of the requirement to do packet pickup the day before...but I realize now I've got another commitment on the expo day, so no-go for me. Good luck! Wish I could be there to cheer you on!

Exactly the approach I take to the scale...minus the actual spreadsheet. Very well explained, IMO. I'd be interested in the link.

You CAN have a friend pick up your packet for you, as long as you provide a copy of your DL and a signed letter authorizing your friend to pick up the packet.  This was a selling point for me, because I'm not sure if I can be there the day before. If I can be, I'd be happy to pick up your stuff for you ... no excuses now, huh, Fun Boy?

All this talk about weight loss just reminded me: This week is the 5th anniversary of my decision to start losing weight.

At the beginning of 2004, I was 5'10 1/2" and at least 240 lbs and starting to get all the annoying health problems that come with obesity in early middle age. I hit my original goal weight (<180 lbs.) in October of 2005, after 21 months of diet and exercise. I've stayed solidly below my goal for more than three years now.

After shifting from exercise for weight loss to training for competition, I reached a "stopping point" of 75 lbs. lost (i.e., 165) a year ago. I averaged between 163 and 169 for every month of 2008 with only a couple weeks over 170. Like anyone battling any addiction, I have to reaffirm my commitment each and every day. I wish it got easier with time, but it doesn't really. The benefits, though, are way more than worth the ongoing work.

Found a picture last night on our PC that was taken within two weeks of when I started dieting in January 2004...good reminder of how far I've come since then. At some point, maybe I'll post a "before and after" here.

Hi guys,

 Sorry I've been out of the loop lately. Just to chime in on Morgan's thought, I think that some great points are raised. I think that part of the culture of triathlon is to challenge yourself in ways you maybe never have. I think it doesn't take long before you've worked past sprint into olympic and then you're eyeballing the longer distances. For me, at least, it's not about exercise.

It's getting late here on the East Coast, but I got myself on the bike trainer for an easy pace 45-minute spin.

And I finally found something that made the trainer time fly by for me: reading. If my feet weren't falling asleep a tiny bit and I weren't literally dripping sweat all over the floor, I would not have believed 45 minutes had passed. Of course, this worked because it was a hard cover book that would lay open by itself on a small pillow resting on my handlebars (I only have a road bike). I never tried this before but will have to again.

Edited to add dumb question: If I had aero bars, would it be possible to hold open a book while riding a trainer? Or would that be very uncomfortable?

I like the pillow idea. Just bought a trainer over the holidays and I've been holding a paperback in my hands resting on my aerobars while I ride on it. We're planning to get a small TV/DVD player for our 2nd bedroom/bike room eventually...in the meantime, it's books for me as well.
