Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Augusta : Official Threadrugb_wngr - 2009-08-28 2:15 PM this will be my first 70.3 (i have done several sprints) and i have a couple of questions for you guys.
1) i notice on the bike map that there are two "bottle exchange" points. how does that work... are they like a run water stop or do we give them a full bottle before the race to give us on the ride. i will have my front bar-mount water bottle and figure to just refill on the ride with bottled water. will they give out bottled water or do i need to give it to them.
2) i figure to burn through breakfast and dinner somewhere between the swim and first 10mi on the bike. what are the better ways to refuel. i think i would like to do apple wedges or peeled orange slices (i cant stand Goo or Energy Bars) ... will i need to carry them with me for the ride? what other small food items are doable?
Thanks. 1) As others noted, you'll get the option of grabbing a bottle of water or Gatoraid at the bottle exchange points. Make sure you are comfortable grabbing them on the move. Also, make sure to toss any bottles in the drop zone, or you may get penalized. 2) Ack. You should be practicing with nutrition now! Everyone is different. I, for instance, have a stomach of steel, so tolerate almost anything. Other folks, not so much. You will also get a lot of advice about how many ounces and calories each hour you should be taking. I would use those as very loose guidelines. It totally depends on your body type (and not just size) and the weather. For what it's worth, I think most people eat too much in long distance events. But pick some easy things that you think will appeal to you, stuff them in your back pockets or a bento box, and start practicing with them now to make sure you tolerate them, not only on the bike, but when you get off to run. Mostly, you really want to avoid a bloated feeling from too much of anything. |
