There is a convenient store about halfway out. Once you trun left off of route 1 and onto Whiskey Road it is on the right at the hill top. There is another at Pine Log Rd and Storm Branch Rd about 3/4 of the way in.

There's also one on Atomic Road around mile 18ish- you'd have to pass up the right turn onto Highway 1 though just a tad to get to it.  But it's an option as well.

this will be my first 70.3 (i have done several sprints) and i have a couple of questions for you guys.

1) i notice on the bike map that there are two "bottle exchange" points. how does that work... are they like a run water stop or do we give them a full bottle before the race to give us on the ride. i will have my front bar-mount water bottle and figure to just refill on the ride with bottled water. will they give out bottled water or do i need to give it to them.

2) i figure to burn through breakfast and dinner somewhere between the swim and first 10mi on the bike. what are the better ways to refuel. i think i would like to do apple wedges or peeled orange slices (i cant stand Goo or Energy Bars) ... will i need to carry them with me for the ride? what other small food items are doable?

Thanks.

as for refueling, i do keep my bento box on my bike pretty stashed full with foodage...i'm not a huge fan of gels either (though I do them), so i do go for gummy bears some times or candy for the easy accessible carbs.  i find that those types of stuff are easier to keep in your bento box than real food, btu i do know people who keep PB&J sammies with them on their long rides.  I would just try out a couple different things on your long rides coming up to see what works best for you...

The bottle exchange folks will give you either a bottle of water or gatorade. The bottles are the commercially available type you get at the grocery store so refilling your aero bottle will work fine. If you have a regular bottle the expectation is to toss it in the general area of the others on the ground, identify a bottle person and yell what bottle you want. WATER or GATORADE!

As far as food goes, you need to try any and all types to see how well you transport it and stomach it during training then race with whatever works. Personally, I use gels and drinks, but Penny is right about the other options.
I would stay away from apples and oranges due to the high fiber content and subsequent slow gastric emptying. If you want fruit stick with bananas.
Just remember to race like you trained.

This is my first HIM as well.  I plan on cutting up a PBJ and taking bites throughout the bike ride as well.

As always, plenty of GU packs to get me ready for the run!

I start no earlier than wave 20, not liking that!

1) As others noted, you'll get the option of grabbing a bottle of water or Gatoraid at the bottle exchange points. Make sure you are comfortable grabbing them on the move. Also, make sure to toss any bottles in the drop zone, or you may get penalized.

2) Ack. You should be practicing with nutrition now! Everyone is different. I, for instance, have a stomach of steel, so tolerate almost anything. Other folks, not so much. You will also get a lot of advice about how many ounces and calories each hour you should be taking. I would use those as very loose guidelines. It totally depends on your body type (and not just size) and the weather. For what it's worth, I think most people eat too much in long distance events. But pick some easy things that you think will appeal to you, stuff them in your back pockets or a bento box, and start practicing with them now to make sure you tolerate them, not only on the bike, but when you get off to run. Mostly, you really want to avoid a bloated feeling from too much of anything.

i second the practicing grabbing the bottles on the move...my first tri a couple years ago, i had not practiced, and i rode off the road, nearly killing myself as i crossed traffic that wasn't blocked off.  don't be stupid like me (or at least be better at handling your bike than me...)

For those that missed the swim/ride/run today (Saturday 29 August) or just feel the need to do it all again. A few of us are doing the swim at 7:00 am (Sunday 30 August) followed by the course ride tomorrow. Feel free to join us. Also for those that need a little extra on the ride Bluejack and I are going to add on another 20 or so by going back out to the Jackson post office when we get into Beach Island then coming back.
