Master 2501 | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL enginerd - 2009-04-24 11:29 AM I'd like to put together a little mini calendar here of everyone's races. I can comb through everyone's profiles, but it'd help me out a bit if you could post here. I can compile them all or just tack on to the starter list below. 4/26/09 Big Sur Marathon - Jules 4/26/09 La Jolla Half Marathon - Ronen 4/26/09 More Half Marathon - Kelli 5/2/09 Wildflower Long Course - Donato, Bryan, Joel 5/3/09 Wildflower Olympic - Donato 5/23/09 Ironman Lanzarote - Mauro 6/14/09 Escape from Alcatraz - Donato 7/19/09 Door County Tri - Pam 8/1/09 Vineman (full) - Steve, Donato, Bryan 8/23/09 Timberman Half - Kelli 8/30/09 IM Canada - Yvonne, Donato 9/13/09 IM Wisconsin - Pam I'm doing the Victoria New Balance International Triathlon on June 21. It's not a "70.3" but is a HIM distance (it's in kms, so it actually ends up a wee bit short, but it's long enough to count in my book!) I have not figured out my summer races and working around vacation schedules, etc. I also have a very sick father-in-law (with whom I have run 2 marathons!) so all plans seem very tentative right now. I will enter local sprint/Oly races as I see fit and do hope to do another HIM. Favorite protein or meat? Tough one. I probably prefer beans or eggs over any kind of meat. I'll take 'em any which way. If I have to choose a meat it's probably fish, as long as someone else is preparing it (I'm not the best fish cook!). I ususally order fish at restaurants and I also love sushi! |

I am not a big meat fan. Chicken breast would be my choice if I had to. When/if I have it, I prefer it marinated and grilled. |

There are three of us racing so we'll all be looking forward to the RRs! Thanks!! This will be my wife's first 1/2 marathon ever. My plan is to run with her, following her pace for the entire race. We are both excited about it. Wishing Kelli and Jules good luck on their race this weekend!

Ditto on the good luck wishes! Here's to good weather and good racing! Ronen, have fun with your wife! I used to run with my husband years ago... but won't anymore because I am too competitive. He tagged along with me training for our first (his only) marathon, but on long runs he ran about 10 feet in front of me the whole way. And he beat me by 30 minutes in the race. I couldn't stand it. He insists I'm now faster than he is (which I think is true), but I'm emotionally scarred and refuse to run with him for the sake of our marriage. Good for you two running together. Enjoy!! |

Whew TGIF, customer escalation over! Anyway BEEF... picanha, aka Brasilian Beef. Just salt and over charcoal. Kalbi ribs are good too. For yesterday OWS question, I used to think OWS is great for training, but now I feel that pool training is better... better sense of rhythm and pace in a more controlled environment. OWS is good for acclimating your body to cold water races though. Donato, I just found out that there's an OWS area in San Mateo Coyote Point. There's some small ripple waves and buoys. Not sure how healthy the water is vis a vis Aquatic Park. |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL I guess I should answer my own QOTDs: OWS: I'm pretty bad about doing OWS. I've done 2 this year, one was during IM Cal and the other was the weekend before during wildflower training weekend. I too don't find it to necessarily be a great workout, but it's a chance to swim in a bit more race-like conditions (including wearing a wetsuit, the colder water, etc.). meat/protein: boy, this is tough. I used to be a big chilean sea bass fan. I love sushi (had it 4 times this week). There was an 18 year period in my life when I didn't eat beef, chicken, or pork, but I started up again a couple years ago so I going through a bit of a culinary renaissance with them (that and we bought a ceramic BBQ last year and have been using that almost every weekend since). |

I added a few more of my races that are very important to my IM journey. Thanks for starting this... it will be great to keep up with everyone and their schedule! I'm off to bed. I have a 14 mile run tomorrow... entering a new frontier. I have never gone over 13.1 mi before :) Edited by crea0029 2009-04-24 9:57 PM |

Master 2404 Redlands, CA | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL Lets see; Open water swims, still haven't done one for training purposes. However living in the desert I have no excuse no to do them. I'm about 30 minutes from several of them, and plan on running them once I get my swim skills up. My favorite meat; hard to say, I'm really too much a fan of all them. I'll post my schedule later when I look at my calendar. |

I'm single with only a dog and already I have trouble keeping my dishes washed and my room clean. I get up early. I workout while the kids are in school (I'm a stay-at-home mom, which helps, but it does not create the "endless" hours most people perceive that it does. My life is very scheduled and structured!) When the kids were young I ran with them in the jogger. I communicate/plan with my husband. My husband and kids know that exercise/working out is a necessary part of me. When I plan races, I communicate well in advance. I put my family first, however, and will always sacrifice a workout or race if there is an important family event or need. |

Master 2501 | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL I'm going to post a QOTD for today (or Monday, given that it's getting later on the other coast): QOTD: What is your "routine" when you feel a cold/illness coming on? Do you have favorite products or home remedies that you use? How do you handle working out? I'll answer... (I feel the slightest tinge of a sore throat, which is why I asked the question). In terms of things I take, I immediately hit the Zicam nasal inhaler thing 3-4x a day. I also pound vitamin C, about 2K-3Kmg/day. Of course I try to make sure I am drinking plenty of water and sleeping and eating well. (I do that normally but try to put in the extra effort where I normally may cut a corner here or there.) In terms of working out, I am always trying to get "one last" workout in in case I get slammed. I don't tend to stop working out to keep a cold from coming on. I may scale back intensity if I start feeling really ick. And, of course, if the sickness really gets me, I'll rest accordingly... |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL kkcbelle - 2009-04-26 7:24 PM I'm going to post a QOTD for today (or Monday, given that it's getting later on the other coast): QOTD: What is your "routine" when you feel a cold/illness coming on? Do you have favorite products or home remedies that you use? How do you handle working out? Great question. I start to feel it as congestion in my ears and a little in my throat. I primarily take something with zinc in it. I used to use airborne (or the walgreen's generic equivalent wal-borne), but lately I've just taken zinc supplements. I'll also back down on the intensity and volume of my training (although I still always bike to work unless I'm totally sick in which case I'd be staying home anyway) too depending on how I feel. I don't sick very often, but if I do, it often also ends up affecting my lungs since I have asthma (and I may also end up having to use my inhaler). The general rule of thumb is if it your cold is above the neck, it's okay to keep working out and if it's below the neck it's not. Rest is also good! |
