Is once a week enough to make significant changes, do you think? Pondering where to fit yoga into my schedule and having the same issue, wondering whether one Saturday morning class is enough.

NO... you wont see anything if you did something once a week.. yoga is something you want to practice a minimal (im being easy with this) twice a week.. strategically placed .. a few days apart..

i havent practiced yoga in a bit.. but benefits are great when practice volume is high.

Ok guys, mission accomplished!
Finished my first race of the season. It was fun!!!
Beautiful day in Parris Island, pretty impressive place! The combat pool is spectacular and huge!!!
The swim wasn't as chaotic as I expected. I was able to overtake without a problem.
Slow T1 but not bad.
A little deviation on the bike (lack of signs) but not big deal. I think I averaged about 20.5 MPH, lots of room for improvement.
Quick T2
I sucked a little less on the run this time, but still, dragging my big rear to the finish line......
Felt great and, nice event lots of great people, just another reason to keep doing this.
Don't have split times yet, total time was 1:08:22 about 96 overall out of almost 300.
A friend felt from his bike and dislocated his shoulder. Made me realize that just to be able to participate and cross the finish line in one piece, it's already a win...

Good luck to all on your first race! Looking forward to reading your experiences.

Thank you all for your comments! That's awesome, very encouraging!

Next race is an Olympic and I already know that it's going to be painful. First time swimming in open ocean, first time wearing a wet suit and surrounded by 4000 athletes. Nerve wrecking

Competed in a short "super sprint" tri this weekend.  Tons of fun, this being only my second tri race, but I enjoyed just being there.  Won my age group, but don't know yet how many I competed against (hasn't been posted).  The swim was in a YMCA pool (25yd).  What is the best way to pass somone?  You would go up and back in one lane, cross to the next, and go up and back again, etc., so it was pretty tight to pass, if possible at all.  I was gassed anyway, but just curious in case I find myself in that situation again in the future.

Also, how competitive are you in a race?  I try to race against myself (grade my own level of effort), but I find if I have someone in front of me it is a great motivator.  This was a modified order tri with a self-seeding timetrial bike start.  I started towards the top third, and found great satisfaction in reeling in and passing these much nicer bikes and decked out bikers out on the course, and also on the run.  I am a Christian, and I feel guilty in a way for feeling that much self-pride.  I tried to spur others on, but still....

I love the training and the self-competition of increasing laptimes, etc., and just being out there now compared to where I used to be, but I must admit the ranking against others is an ego booster.

I'm starting to get a little anxious about my first tri in July (Oly) because I'm finding it hard to get all the workouts in!  I have to get up at 5am to get a session in before work and I don't get home until 7:30pm.  Oh, and I still haven't managed to save up for a bike.  Do you think any local business would sponsor me with a bike?  Any ideas?

One thing I do feel good about is my endurance level.  I can swim the full 1.5k now.  Last week I got a two hour bike ride in (at the gym) and I managed a 19k run the week before.

Thanks,
Jason

In pool swims.. if you close in on someone.. you are suppose to tug on his toe or site to see if you have enough time to pass. I usually bump the foot with my hand, and pass them at the wall.. congrats on winning AG.. (super sprints are anaerobic races, so if your aren't gassed your aren't trying hard enough) lol

As competitive... we are competitive by nature.. guys are worst because of that testosterone/masculine stuff.. So I put it all out there.. whatever happens happens... Its me against the clock. thats the good thing about tri's.. its you and the clock not you and the field per say.. Just be thankful for your abilities and your results. boasting of your abilities is what get you in trouble.. feeling good about the accomplishment isnt a bad thing.

Well, bro.. Time management has been a problem for me for a long time. I have learned this.. In a workout week they're some important workouts that need to happen. there's atleast 3 that are must do's. (These are the workout that require most on time..) make sure you get those done.. recovery/short workouts are important(dont get me wrong)..

Look at your week.. plan accordingly.. (i plan my workouts a week in advance.. it seems to work)

talk to your local bike shop to see if you can rent a bike. do you know anyone with a extra bike you could borrow? you can try to see if a local company would sponsor you.. but most times they would do race cost and maybe lodging.. not sure they would do the bike.. no harm in trying!

Good luck bro

Pick up a beginner road or tri bike on craigslist.  If you are patient and vigilant you can grab a great deal.  I bought my first road bike on CL - it was a Trek 1.2, a fine starter bike and now I keep it indoor on my trainer year-round.  I bought it for $200 - everything but pedals, which were an extra $30 at the time from a bike shop.

Also bought my Cervelo P2 on Craigslist for AN AMAZING deal of $650 including everything but the pedals - and it even came with 2 extra continental GP4000 tires.  That was a tremendous deal.

I would advise going to a bike store, getting your size taken and then finding a deal online - then going to get a bike fit.  It is not the BEST way to get it done, but if you do your homework, you can come out on top in a budget.

Momo, I'm sure you'll do great in your race! To know that you (mighty Obi-Wan Kenoby) also feel nervous about a race, makes me feel better.......      How about you Shane, any races coming up? How you feel? ANYBODY ELSE RACING????
Jason, how's your bike deal going?  I hope you are trying e-bay. They have some AWESOME deals. You can also try Sunrise Cyclery.com, they have great deals on new bikes (older models) as well. Good luck

I ran into someone from a running group I used to run with at the pool.  She invited me to run with them last Saturday.   During the run I was talking about triathlon and my lack of a bike so one guy offered to lend me his tri bike that he rarely uses.  I guess its fairly old but was a high end bike in its time.  What differences can I expect using an older bike?

Thanks for all the advice!

Jason congrats! I'm so glad you found a bike! I'm too new to this to know the difference between an old and a new bike. But hey, I do know the difference between ANY bike and NO bike!!
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you don't end up owning it, you'll get a chance to learn what you want in a bike.
Are you already signed up for a race? Nothing can stop you now. Have fun! riding is a blast!

And thanks, I'm pretty exited about NY. I was onece registered back in 1999 and couldn't to it due to work. So I hope all goes well this time.
