Ok.  Cool.  I'll check it out when I'm at my computer tonight and PM you.

Steve- - 2010-01-03 11:43 AM Ok everyone.  I am going to offer up to everyone a swim stroke "review" for just the people in our mentor group.  The month of January tends to be a bit slower for me so I will commit to you that if anyone gets to me a video of them swimming by January 15th I will take a few moments to look it over and give you feedback.  You can either email me the video, FTP the video to me, or send snail mail to me.

Anyone interested just be sure I get the file by 1/15 so I can have time to review it.

I got a video onto YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nOfMoe22n8  This kind stranger agreed to one lap, but must have thought A Lap was one length.  I found it humorous.

Is there a different way you'd prefer?  I don't know what FTP is, or an e-mail address to use.  Thanks for offering this.

1st brick today.  3 hours on trainer doing Madison tape then 33 min run outside.  Legs still felt like they were cycling when I was done running.  Wierd.

Thats a heck of a first brick!  How did you like the Madison tape?  I got it for christmas and will definitely turn music on for background from now on.  Troy Jacobson commentary was a "yawner" to say the least.

3 hours on a trainer must have felt like torture...great job!

Ryan

Turned commentary on mute after 1st 10 min (definitly a yawner) then put on ipod.  Biking was not torture but I found myself wishing I could lean into corners, etc while watching the DVD.  Looked like there were some decent hills but nothing too bad.  Kind of like around where I live.  I fueled myself with watered down lemonade and fritos.  Felt pretty good all the way through.  The recommened gearing did not jive perfectly with the terrain which was a disapointment.

I bought that same DVD last year, watched it once and fell off the trainer I was bored .  Sold it to a guy in IL who was convinced it would give him insight into the course.  As a novice biker and someone who has ridden the loop a few times, I don't think the DVD does it justice......I give you credit for sticking it out.

So when is your first race? 3 hour trainer rides plus a 6m ish run??? YOWZA.

We needed a bump!  Page 2?  NO WAY!

I had a great ride on my new tri bike today.  39 miles in the great outdoors!  It felt really awesome to be out there even though I did bundle up with my capri bike pants and a long sleeve jacket and gloves.  Yes, we are lucky out here on the west coast!

(sorry tracy )

We need to get to page 13 too. Nice ride there girly. I am super envious of your ride, gloves and all. It is blowing 90 mph here on Lake Michigan. Winter...it sucks.

My friends at the healthclub ride every sunday and watch a movie.  It's called Theater in the Saddle.  I did it for the first time last sunday and it was fun...we watched the unrated version of Hangover.

I wasn't too keen on being on a spin bike and not knowing my watts so I think I'll bring my bike and computrainer next time i go...would that be weird?

Steve, I'm sure your friends like you for you.
It's probably a little bit ocd, but aren't we all?
Like you always say, as long as you get your workout in and hit the zones, do it with friends or without!

Hey we are supposed to reach 38 degrees this week!! That will be a heat wave for us..it was 9 degrees this morning which is pretty much bone chilling.

I have come to appreciate winter though and do not mind it too much...2 more months and we can get the bikes back on the road...cross your fingers.

I would bring mine. A spin bike!! I don't think so. I need to know either my watts or how fast I am cycling. It would be weird to be just spinning and not know. Does that make us control freaks??

Steve/Scott (if he is around )

Do you ever throw optional or just-for-fun workouts in your athletes plans?  Since swimming is my weak link, I know I can pretty much swim whenever I want to, but I always follow one of my perscribed workouts.  Today, I didn't.  Just did my own thing and it was awesome. Laughing.  I love the structure and knowledge that coaches provide, but sometimes you just want some freedom.  Thoughts?

Do other people have a little flex in their plans????

I'm hoping to get some input on this matter:

I'm looking for inserts to put into my running shoes/flats.  I have been rotating 3 different pairs of shoes when I train so my feet don't get accostomed to a specific type of shoe.  (1: Asics Gel Nimbus-cushion shoe, 2: Adidas AdiZero CS-running flat, and Adidas AdiZero Mana-running flat).  I really like the responsiveness of the racing flats and along the way I like to do a lot of my long runs in the Nimbus for the added cushion.

Also, this past February of 2009 I developed what was much later diagnosed as Posterior Tibial Tendinitis.  The tendinitis is flaring up because my arch (on my right foot for the purposes of this discussion) is collapsing too much when I'm running, particularly whenever I do speedwork or run 5-10k's

That's the background.  My question is can anyone recommend to me some support inserts to place in my shoes to support my arch and resulting pronating ankle?  I know that I should look into buying some Support specific shoes but outside of that I was wondering if anyone is currently using or can recommend running soles that provide support.  I know there are a few options out there even to the extent that you can mold some inserts before placing them in your shoes.

Any advice is welcome so please send it over.  If you don't want to clog the Forum I'd also accept PM's.

Thanks everyone...

While finding more support may be an appropriate short term fix, I might suggest that moving to less support and strengthening your smaller, stabilizing muscles, ligaments/connective tissues may prove a more solid long term solution. There has been reseach in recent years that has shown more support reduces the strength of these connective tissues and stabilizing muscles causing the need for more support causing a more weakening, etc...a downward spiral. It has been shown that a move towards less and less support produces less running injuries. I personally have experienced this as well to the point where I trained regularly for and raced in a half marathon all in Nike free shoes. My training consisted of at least 4 runs of 13.1 miles. Just food for thought and not professional advice as I am not professionally trained in injury prevention. However, Endurance Sports Institute is hosting an injury prevention clinic in January with Dr. Davenport who has completed 80 marathons (a ton of which were in less than 3 hrs) and a bunch of 100 mile ultramarathons...all 100% uninjured. This might be an interesting clinic for you to listen to.

Prior to moving to a less supportive shoe, did you ever have problems with plantar fasciatis (sp?) ? I'm intriqued by the less supportive idea, but have had pf in both feet and am concerned about it coming back. I understand the theory behind the less supportive method, but don't know anybody who has moved to it after suffering from pf, so I'm a bit skeptical/concerned.

yes, I had PF as well as ITBS but moving to less supportive shoes and Pose method of running has allowed me to not experience reoccuring since the move.   I moved to Pose in 2004 and Nike free a few years ago.

Thanks for the input Steve and everyone.  I have "taken it easy" as far as running is concerned since early October 2009.  Additionally I began doing strength training specific to the injury after my rest period was over.  That involved, calf raises, hip adductor/abductor work, stability ball exercise, etc.  So I definitely see your point about not relying on stabilizing technology in shoes but to work towards stregthening areas that are weak and avoid injury.

My issue is that I don't think that I've "strengthened" my weaknesses enough to offset what is causing the pain/flareups/tendonitis.  Keep in mind that the few times I've ran, it's been inside, on a treadmill, at a very easy pace.  So the rest I've had, with the strengthening, and the easy pace of my runs should mean that I shouldn't have any flare ups.  I've never had any injuries before except for tendonitis in my hitting shoulder when I played high school and college volleyball.  I just think that if I can keep my arch from flattening I can be pain/tweek free when running.  I guess I'll try shopping for some stability specific shoes in the future.
