Tuesday night: I've got ~1.5 hours between work and school, so I'll get about 30 minutes easy swim.
BTW: I ran ~10k Sunday night at a good pace with minimal discomfort, so looks like Austin 26.2 is a GO! However, I'm kinda back and forth on my race goal. I'm leaning towards settling back to a more manageable sub-4hr (vs. my original goal 3:40hr).

Davey, Unfortunatley, if I listened to my body all the time I'd be napping at lunch and spending my evenings on the couch with a bag of chips!  That aside, I know what you are saying!

Tuesday: made my triumphant return to the pool this morning after 3 months off.  Strength at lunch and hopefully if I get home at a reasonable hour, I will try to get a 45 min drainer ride in tonight.

how about train as much and smart as you can until then, then play it by ear on race day..........you would be surprised what you will be able to do!  maybe start out the first half of the race at 3:45ish pace and re eval at each 6 mile point?

I need swimming advice!!!
I am scouring the site for swim pointers and recommended workouts etc. to prep for my first sprint in May. Question: how important are all these drills for a beginner (right, left arm pulls, catchups, ladders, pull buoy stuff, etc). I understand the importance of working on my form, and building some endurance, but do I need to waste my precious time learning these drills, when I'm still learning how to swim?
Yesterday I did 8x50, each slowly (~1 min), working on my breathing and form, and I felt pretty good about the workout when I was done. My goal is to swim 500m without drowning, that's pretty much it for my first tri.

I think one of the best sites to get swim workouts from is 50swimworkouts.com (or something like that).  as far as the drills go, and speaking from experience here, yes, they are well worth the time as they will teach you not only how to swim but how to swim PROPERLY from the beginning.  dont waste your time trying to learn how to swim with bad technique than have to "relearn" how to swim properly later on.............

X2 on the swim training advice. I wish I had started with the drills. I have been swimming since I was 4 but never learned proper form and I am paying for it now. You can build skills and endurance and be ready for that 500M.

Still lots of snow on the ground here, and 12- 20 inches forecast over Friday and Saturday.  Looks like treadmills and trainers are my future.

Hit the treadmill for 4 miles, and some strides.  Felt good.  Monday's run felt like crap.

Also signed up for the inagural Washington DC Tri in June.  Pretty damn expensive, but it's just down the road from me, so that helps.

Davey I love Yoga and Pilates. I thought it was a huge joke until we had to do hot room Yoga in College. I would lose between 3-5 lbs of water weight after an hour. It was intense, but we had far less injuries and soreness because of it. I got away from it and look what happened. I would highly recommend Yoga or Pilates to anyone. Its alittle boring at times, but its great for relaxing and it really does stretch you out really good. When my leg feels alittle better I will be doing the P90x yoga.

Fully agree with Davey on this one. Using the least amount of energy possible is the best thing for you. Good techinque is how you do it. The drills, while not feeling like it, you are still putting in the time and energy to swim while also getting better at your stroke. Stay with short distances for now, because when you go longer you get bored and bad form creeps in. Catchup is a WONDERFUL drill for new swimmers, it makes you reach. Remeber rotation is key in swimming. There is a pole running down your body and your rotating about the pole. A new beginner doing drills and short distances should be able to get 1500yds in without to much difficulty in an hour. I pushed my older kids last night and we did 7400 in 1.5 hours, granted I gave them 20 200's on 2:30. They werent very happy with me.

Snow/Rain/snow just as predicted for the Richmond, VA area. So I got on the treadmill for the first time since last winter. Since I can't stand the monotony I decided to do intervals.
Warm up - 4 min fast walk/4 min slow jog
Intervals 1 min fast walk/3 min run
Run intervals were 9min/mi, 8.5min/mi, 8min/mi, 8.5min/mi, 9min/mil, 7.5min/mil, 9min/mi
Cool down - 3 min slow jog/ 4 min fast walk.

reporting in - swimming is feeling better (ditto, do the drills) and I'm also just getting the slow breath out while underwater thing. Also scored a freebie bike (a friend was getting rid of it) so very excited about that. After the 10K in -2, I'm feeling more ready for outdoor runs, buuuut.....

BOTH of the sprints I was hoping for aren't going to work b/c I have to be out of town. Very disappointing.

Hey guys,

Sorry that I have been gone for the past two weeks, but I have been pretty sick.  I have had a sinus infection and other stuff that will not go away.  I am now on steroids and more anti-biotics.  I would have gone running except everytime I bend down to tie my shoe laces, I can take feel my pulse in my sinuses.  It was not good to move around let alone run for a while.

I will be in the gym tomorrow getting in a good run.

Glad you are feeling better Eric. I hate it when I get sick. We have only had one bout of sickness go through our family this winter and I was out of town and missed it. Who hoo! It can be hard to start back up with the training. I hope you have a great run.

Fairly entertaining. The Etrade commercials were a hoot and I liked undercover boss as well, pretty good show.

i made it back out to the basketball court last night. It got tight a couple times, but overall I was able to play pretty well. Couldnt sprint like I wanted to, but it was nice to be able to get a good running workout in. Yoga is nice, but nothing like running up and down the floor.

53epilot - 2010-02-08 12:33 PM Hey guys,

OH Man, I think I'm dealing with a sinus infection myself right now.  I had a cold last week and now the cold is gone, but the right side of my face is in some good pain and pressure.  I know exactly what you mean by bending over and feeling the pulse in your face. Also, the crap coming out of my nose is just nasty!  I feel your pain.  I've pushed through my workouts though and I find while I'm working out the symptoms dissapear and I feel fne, once I stop though they are there again.  I'm going to give it to the end of the week to clear up, if not I'll go to the Dr.

Got back in the pool this morning and met two guys tri-training too.  Outside of this site, I have zero tri-friends, so I'm looking forward to Tuesday morning swims so I can shoot the sh&t with others that can relate.

Re: the game, we took our son Evan to our friends SB party, so I was too focused making sure he didn't destroy their house than watching the game, we also had to leave at 1/2 time to get him to bed, So I really didn't watch too much of it.  However, the Troy Palamalou commercial had me in tears.  I have mixed emotions for the Saints.  I am glad they won for the city, I really like Drew Brees and Sean Peyton, but on the otherhand, I think Jeremy Shockey is the biggest DB in the NFL.  I am a die hard Giants fan, so seeing him win was painful for me.

Long run, 1 swim, lift and bike done for the week.  Running at lunch today and 1 more swim and lift and 2 runs & bikes left.  11 workouts a week now, tough to manage, but I'm trying my best!

Hey guys,
I'm headed to Austin tomorrow morning for the Valentine's Day 26.2 (yes, I know, not a thrill for my Valentine, but she's learned to deal with me and my quirks). I feel like my calf is healed, but laying off of it for essentially a whole month makes me a little nervous that I've lost some conditioning. Anyway, I'm going out with the 3:40 bunch just like I'm 100%. If it's not there, then I hope to rock back and just try to fend off the 4:00 crowd that should be chasing me. We'll see how it goes.
I won free tickets to the Houston Aero hockey game Sunday at 4pm. So, not much to to recover. Just jump in the car and head straight back to Houston. Hopefully, my Valentine still loves me enough to do the driving. We'll have to see how that goes too.
Wish me luck...on both fronts!
